Introducing The Art and Science of Respect
T he Art and Science of Respect: A Memoir by James Prince is written by James Prince, founder of Rap-A-Lot Records. The memoir tells the story of how Rap-A-Lot Records came to be the most successful, pioneering and independent label carrying Hip Hop music. It also gives readers a closer look at the life of Prince, the man whose management and entrepreneurial skills earned the respect of music superstars like Jay-Z, Diddy, and Bun. The author highlights in his book the principles that made him a successful manheart, loyalty, and commitment. He says these three principles can be used by all other entrepreneurs and similarly achieve success just as he did. Readers are given an account of how hip hop in the South came about.
The foreword is written by Drake, one of the successful musicians under Princes label. Drake relates how Princes son Jas Prince discovered him and how Prince impressed on him the importance of being a solid person who can work well on his music. Through our ears, he reinforced the importance of being self-contained, Drake writes. He adds that Prince taught him how to build his team, and how to respect and value the teams all-out support for the movement that they are building. He learned from him that no one becomes great on our own. Drake calls him Pops, considers himself an adopted son, and almost like a brother to Princes sons Jas and Baby Jay. The foreword also features quotes from rap artists Bun B. and Jay-Z who express admiration for the man. Bun B. says that Prince made a lot of contributions and people should be aware of it. Jay-Z says Prince is someone he can trust because "if he tells you something, he's gonna do it." He knows Prince is somebody he can do business with because his word is true. Prince writes in a conversational manner, giving the reader the feeling of listening to someone familiar who has had an interesting life. He tells how he transformed from a street hustler to a music company CEO, to a boxing manager, and a successful entrepreneur. He mentions all the successful musicians and boxers he has worked with, providing anecdotes that reveal interesting sides to the celebrities. These include The Geto Boys, Suge Knight, Mike Tyson, Andre Ward, Lou DiBella, Irv Gotti, and many others. Prince does not say embarrassing things about the people he had difficulty working with. He admits he had rough or uncomfortable times with some people and he tells how these were settled amicably, though there were times that they were not. Prince recalls his experience as a boy growing up in the notorious neighborhood of Fifth Ward. He admits he is not spotless, he has dirt on him and he had to use street hustle to get out of difficult situations. He says it is the same hustle he used to succeed in the music industry and eventually into other businesses.
Prince's honesty comes through as he tells readers how he was able to leave the life of poverty and achieve success. All of my life, I thought the only way to make money off grass was by selling weed-until I started selling hay. He explains that from being an illegal seller of grass, he became a legal seller of hay. This became possible when he bought acres of land and sold hay from it. This story also shows his knack for knowing how to do business. The memoir sheds light into the work ethic and spiritual resource that Prince depended on. He worked hard toward success, with an attitude described by some critics as insatiable and maniacal. He also had a keen sense of knowing people, able to see through their intentions. He admits to being a spiritual person, a quality he always had even during his street hustle days. Readers are surprised to learn that he has a deep faith in God. What they knew was that he was reportedly a drug dealer which was contrary to what he reveals in the book. Prince says it was his faith in God that guided him in making important decisions. Reading the book, readers came to see a different person in contrast to what they heard about him. His story about how he came to be named James Prince is an interesting part of the book. His gives accounts of how he dealt with wily recording industry executives, faced corrupt people from the DEA, and stood against bullish boxing promoters. His most outstanding quality, however, is his generosity. The book relates how he provided opportunities for people out of work, how he bought homes for his friends and relatives, and how he built a community center. The book is considered inspirational and educational. Readers like it for being a quick and easy read. Readers also liked the humor in the book. They say they got some tips from Prince on how to raise children. Business practices are taught, giving aspiring entrepreneurs lots of wise and practical tips. Princes words are appreciated for their authenticity. Readers could easily remember his advice. Their takeaways include Struggle for what you want. Never take no for an answer. Don't give up on yourself. The Art and Science of Respect is also released as an audiobook.
