About the author
My husband Bruce and I live on the SunshineCoast in Queensland, Australia. We have three adult children,Hayden, Jessica and Caitlin, and five adorable grandchildren,Elijah, Willow, Harlow, Isla and Bodhi. I naively thought lifewould get quieter as I got older, but the more grandchildren thatarrive, the busier I become. I love spending time with family andfriends, traveling, cycling, and riding my scooter, Lola.
I provide an online consultation service www.babycareadvice.com for parents living around the globe (provided they speakEnglish). Consultations relate to infant crying, feeding andsleeping problems. I love chatting with parents about their babies,so it doesnt feel like work. I also enjoy writing about babyhealth issues and problems experienced by healthy babies which Ipublish on my website, www.babycareadvice.com .My first book, called Your Sleepless Baby, as the name suggests, isabout baby sleep problems and solutions. This was published in2012.
Professional qualifications
I have always enjoyed learning. During mynursing career, which has so far spanned over 40 years, I havegained professional qualifications as a registered nurse, midwife, mental health nurse, pediatric and child health nurse, I am anInternational Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and havea graduate diploma in Health Promotions. Thats over 8 years oftertiary education (university or college level).
Bottle-feeding aversion experience
Australia is one of only a handful ofcountries that train child health nurses to facilitate well-babyhealth checks and provide health information and parenting advicerelated to babies and children up to the age of 18 years. TheAustralian government also funds a number of child health earlyparenting education centers, where parents and their babies andyoung children are admitted to stay for five days. During this timethey receive 24-hour, hands-on support from qualified child healthnurses to assist them to resolve well-baby or child care problems, such as feeding and sleeping problems.
I was employed as a child health nurse in achild health early parenting education center for approximately 18years. During that time, I learned about child development, how itrelates to feeding and nutrition, and the causes and solutions todifferent types of infant feeding problems. I have had innumerableopportunities to bottle-feed babies, observe parents feeding theirbabies and witness how babies respond to different feedingtechniques. I had previously trained as a mental health nurse andstudied the many theories on learned behavior. Working closely withfamilies at the parenting education center I could see how parentsactions influenced their childs behavior, and how certain infantfeeding practices would reinforce or discourage desirable andundesirable behavior, including aversive feeding behavior.
From my experience at the parenting educationcenter, I knew it was not essential to see a physically well babyto identify the reason for crying, feeding or sleeping problems. Ijust needed to know which questions to ask parents. And so, in 2002I decided to start an online consultation service. I developedfeeding plans to resolve behavioral feeding aversions. As a resultof my successes, word spread in parenting forums, and I had asteady flow of feeding aversion cases as well as other baby careproblems. After posting an article on feeding aversion on mywebsite in 2013, the number of cases I assisted with, quadrupled.Feeding aversion is now the most common reason for consultationsbooked through my website. To date, I have been involved with over1000 cases. Eighty percent relate to bottle-feeding aversion andthe rest to breastfeeding and solids.
Why I wrote this book
Parents dont seek an online parentingconsultation service as the first option when faced with an infantfeeding problem. Most of my clients claimed to have consultedbetween three and seven, and some up to 15 health professionalsfrom various fields before discovering my website. Many of myclients express feelings or frustration and anger over theirfruitless search for an effective solution. They explain how theyshed tears time and time again as they witness how upset theirprecious baby becomes at feeding times as he or she franticallytries to avoid feeding despite obvious signs of hunger. Some praydaily for relief from the constant stress.
Many feel socially isolated because theirbaby wont feed except when sleeping. They lie in bed at the end ofeach day and wonder how they will make it through another day. Butthey do, because of the love they feel for their baby. They aretireless in their pursuit for answers.
