Part1 Questions1-17

Alternative Healing

A. When culturaltraditions embrace medicine, people are provided with the benefitsof alternative medicine. However, this is not based upon scientificresearch and evidence. Instead, alternative medicine is resultedfrom knowledge acquisition which has spanned generations. It isinteresting to note that, for centuries, Aboriginal tribes haveacknowledged the importance of plants and herbs. Whether they arelocated in Queensland, Australia, or in the Amazon Rainforest,Brazil, they are able to unveil the secrets of a wide range ofherbs and come up with powerful healing methods. Not only are thesealternative medications effective in a variety of illnesses butthey are also absorbed naturally by the human body.

B. Alternativemedicine can also be used with mainstream techniques and thisassociation is known as CAM (Complementary and AlternativeMedicine). CAM is thus applied when treatment is accompanied bygood nutrition and preventive practice. CAM can also be exemplifiedby individual treatments which are focused on the promotion ofself-care and self-healing. These treatments are regarded as amedical practice on the whole human being, as they are concernedabout spiritual nature as well. This view is often perceived as acomprehensive understanding of the human being, whose body and soulare equally cared for.

C. It is arguedthat CAM is deprived of clinical studies, hence the medicalconcerns about them. Nevertheless, scientific investigations havebeen recently carried out so as to confirm its efficacy and ensureits reliability. Consequently, it is increasingly blurring theboundaries between mainstream medicine and alternativemedicine.

D. Thealternative medicines are divided into five groups. The firstalternative medicine is known as whole medical systems and theyinclude nature-therapy and homeopathy. The second one is concernedabout the intertwined relationship between mind and body. It has aholistic approach to health and it is referred to as mind-bodymedicine. The third one considers the inclusion of biology studiesand it is exemplified by the use of herbs and natural substances. The fourth alternative medicine refers to the manipulation ofdifferent parts of the body, as seen in chiropractic andosteopathic practices. The last one is known as energy medicine asit is a response to energy fields. These energy fields areinfluenced by bio-field therapies and the power of energy healing.Another therapy includes the use of electromagnetic fields so as tostimulate the flow of electric current in the nervecells.

E. However, whenCAM is combined with conventional medicine, it is known as NCCAM(National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine). Thisis due to the fact that people tend to seek a diagnosis from thedoctor. Afterwards, they are willing to seek healing practiceswhich are used in alternative medicines. Thus, conventionalmedicine and CAM are integrated so as to promote the treatment ofthe disease through minimally invasive methods and naturalpractices. Therefore, patients follow practices such as prayer, meditation and yoga whilst undergoing treatments.

F. Thus, CAM isalso used in palliative care. As patients are suffering fromchronic pain in the advanced stage of a disease, multi-professionalteams tend to use alternative therapies so as to alleviate theirpain and provide them with quality of life and care.

G. As a matterof fact, the following treatments are used for handling pain:acupuncture, music therapy, massage, therapeutic touch, homeopathyand herbalism. Furthermore, in the UK, the House of Lords alsoacknowledged that conventional medicine can be complemented by thefollowing therapies: aroma therapy, Back and flower remedies, massage, counselling, hypnotherapy, reflexology, yoga, meditation, and nutritional medicine.
