Dialogue 51 - A Visit tothe Dentist
Butch: I got good news, but you look down.Whats the matter?
James: I had a great date lined up withLani. I was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I knew Ihad competition so if I didnt convince her then that I was hertype of partner, I knew that someone else would get her.
Butch: Ah. I see. What happened?
James: Well, that morning I had to get awisdom tooth out, didnt I!
Butch: Oh no! Sorry to hear that. Theyrethe worst.
James: I was really annoyed because mydental care is good. I avoid sugary food, brush my teeth twice aday for 4 minutes each time, floss after every meal and gargle withmouthwash to reduce the chance of gum disease. I dont want to havedentures like my grandpa.
Butch: Yeah, both my grandparents have falseteeth. They keep them in a glass next to the bed. Gross!
James: So, the dentist took one look at itand said it had to come out. After the operation I had to hold apiece of gauze where the tooth used to be, to stop the blood. Ithought that everything would be okay but
Butch: Let me guess. The gauze cameout!
James: It didnt stop bleeding all night. Ihad to cancel the date. I was sent to a dental hospital where theycould take a closer look and give stitches if necessary. But guesswhat!
Butch: What?
James: The bleeding had stopped by the timethey were able to see me!
Butch: Youre kidding!
James: What a waste of my time! And now itstoo late, because I heard that Lani has found someoneelse.
Butch : Um, actually thats my good news. I wentout with Lani!
James: Ah.
Dialogue 52 - SportsChoices
Kim : Well, its these new sports choices.Laser Tag? Curling? Sumo?
John : Yeah, cool, huh!
Kim : No, its not. I didnt come to thisschool to be involved in wimpy sports. I want a good rough game offootball with maybe some boxing or even a bit of wrestling. But nowthe school is offering these useless sports. How do you make anymoney out of bungee jumping?
John : Ah, I see. You want a sport thatgives you the opportunity to compete and win prizes, or perhapsattract expensive sponsorships. Some of these new sports availableare to help mental development or are just for fun! Look at some ofthese on the list: rock climbing, hang gliding, scuba diving,parachuting... Im personally very interested in spelunking incaves.
Kim : Spelunking isnt a sport.
John : Anything active is a sport. Chessis a sport!
Kim : Chess is not a sport. A sport is a gamethat involves hard work and some risk to life and limb. It involvesa competition with the chance to win something with crowds cheeringyou on. Not some weak sport like abseiling.
John : Abseiling is incrediblychallenging. You get to challenge yourself against the elements andyour fears. It is important for building up your mind as well asyour body. How confident would you feel after sliding down fiftyfeet of cliff face by yourself, without any help, and landingsafely at the bottom?
Kim : I dont hear the crowds.
John : Okay, what about golf? You can winprizes. Youre in a competition and there are crowds.
Kim : Theres no physical contact. How can itbe a competition if you cant even touch your opponent?
John : Okay, fair enough. So, well agreeto disagree. Tell me, what sport have they given to you to do nextterm.
Kim : Synchronised swimming
John : hahahahaha.
Dialogue 53: IntoMarriage
Brad: Long time no see! Lots of things havehappened.
Phil: Oh. I can guess. You didn't end upmarrying her, did you?
B rad: Yes...
Phil: You, who said youd never get into along-term relationship! And you don't want kids.
Brad: I thought Id grow into it. But Istill dont want any children. She wants at least three.
Phil: If you say anything else, Im goingto burst out laughing. What if you come into some money? Could youafford to have kids then?
Brad: Its not about money. Its aboutdealing with young children. I cant stand tweens. I certainlydont want to wish more of them on the world.
Phil: I don't think they're all bad. Ithink the media makes out that it's terrible to take care of kidsreaching puberty, but I've known many families without any problemsat all.
Brad: Maybe they don't tell you about theirproblems.
Phil: Could be.
Brad: Im really not ready to move into anew situation like this. Im only 35. Im too young to havechildren!
Phil: In many cultures around the world 35is too old to have children. You know that there have been somescientific studies on the ability of the man to assist in producinga healthy baby, and that 40 really is the limit?
Brad: There you go. I'm too old then. It'stoo late for me to have children. I'll tell her that when I gethome tonight.
Phil: Im guessingyoure not tuning into your wifes wavelength. Shes only a coupleof years younger, you know. The clock is ticking. Time to do yourduty and have one for you, one for your wife and one for thecountry!
Brad: Nooooo.
Dialogue 54: Overseas Destination
Miya: Youre leaving the country? Where areyou going to move to?
Hiro: Yes. Next month, hopefully.Australia. Sydney, or maybe Melbourne. I havent decided yet. Ineed to get some information.
Miya: Melbourne has a great social scene.Youll have fun there. Though Sydney has more of an internationalvibe.
Hiro: Actually, I need to get a job. Imlooking for a company or a business that is a recognisedorganisation in the industry. A fairly large company where I coulddo some accounting and not have to worry about little things likefixing 0.5c mistakes on invoices.
Miya: Haha. I know what you mean. I reallydont like my job. Its a small company with a family atmospherebut we have to do everything. Vacuum, empty the bins, clean up thekitchen. Its not fun. Id rather work for a large company thatpays cleaners to do that sort of work.
