Chapter 1 - Gardening: A Nature-Friendly Hobby
R epeatedly doing the same things can be quite tiring, boring, and more wearisome than being actively involved in a new pursuit. You could lose interest in something that once piqued your curiosity, and performing tasks can be relatively daunting than before. When this happens, picking up a new hobby is one of the best things to do. You could try different pastimes such as knitting, painting, reading, and writing. You could even start doing sports or exercising. However, if you are the type of person that is reserved and more interested in nature, and how it works, then gardening might just be the perfect hobby for you. It creates a sense of being one with the environment, as well as keeping in touch with natures gifts. It also helps maintain the balance of the ecosystem, and provides healthier surroundings.
There are different types of gardening. Some of which are community gardening, raised bed gardening, indoor gardening, container gardening, and water gardening.
- Community Gardening If you do not have your own lot to tend to, community gardening is a great place to begin. There are communal gardens established for interested residents who are interested in gardening but have little to no land to start with. Every interested individual in your community can participate in maintaining the communal garden. You can plant vegetables, fruits, even herbs, in your little plot of soil..
- Raised Bed Gardening Like in community gardening, if your do not have your own piece of land in which you can plant your preferred flora in, but you have a space in your yard or garage, raised bed gardening is ideal for you. In this type of gardening, wood, stone, or concrete garden beds are constructed on surfaces that cannot be planted on, such as concrete, dried land, and bricked floorings. This way, you do not need to worry about the soil because you get to choose what type of soil you use. Youre able to decide on the design of the raised beds, as well as the length, height, and width of the beds. Because of this, this type of gardening is very suitable for elderly and disabled people.
- Indoor Gardening For people who want to keep in touch with nature even inside closed spaces, indoor gardening is a type you can pursue. It does not only provide aesthetic value to your indoor surroundings but also keeps the air healthy because of the oxygen it produces through photosynthesis.
- Container Gardening If you want to grow plants in a way that you can move them around easily, container gardening is a great practice. Many plants can grow in limited spaces, including pots and other types of makeshift plant containers. You have the ability to move your plants indoors or outdoors as need arises. For example, plants that grow in Spring can be taken out during the season, but after the season is over, you can move it indoors to a space with controlled temperature, sunlight, and moisture.
- Water Gardening This is the type of gardening in which plants are grown in any container that has water in it. This is also called Hydro culture. Ponds, basins, and bowls are examples of water containers that plants can grow in. You can decide which style you want to use. You can landscape your entire yard to accommodate small ponds with fishes and aquatic plants, co-existing in a single environment. The style of gardening where you grow plants and fish together is known as aquaponics. The other type of water gardening is Hydroponics, which is the topic of this book.
Hydroponic gardening is considered a hybrid of water and container gardening, as most types of hydroponic gardening rely on water in a watertight container.
Hydroponic Gardening is basically a way to grow plants without the aid of soil. This may seem against conventional wisdom as plants usually get their nutrients from soil. With hydroponic gardening, its possible for plants to grow without soil, by getting nutrients directly from the water.
