T here is an actual non-profit elephant sanctuary in the United States, but it is not located in New England. Instead, it is located in Hohenwald, TN. It was founded in 1995 and takes in elephants retired from zoos and circuses. The sanctuary provides a natural habitat, minus the normal predators, for the elephants. This sanctuary houses anywhere from 10 to 24 elephants and has a welcome center where guests can learn about the elephants there and their personalities. The sanctuary takes care of sick elephants and studies their behavior. Guests cannot actually see the elephants but they do talk to the behavior specialists and other staff and they can watch videos of the elephants in the sanctuary.

At the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee there was an actual accident where a staff member was injured and subsequently died from her injuries. An elephant got out of hand and crushed her and also injured another staff member in 2006. Her wish was to be buried at the sanctuary and she was.

A mother elephant who has a baby that dies may carry around and hold on to the dead baby for days before she will let it go. Because of this research and notes on her mothers studies, Jenna knows her mother would never abandon her.

Alice was alive when taken to the hospital but disappeared soon after. The trauma could be from loss, but also from the feeling of abandonment.
