Question #1
Where does the story take place?
- A special lab studying apes in the Congo
- An elephant sanctuary in New England
- A wild bird sanctuary in Zimbabwe
- A suburb of Boston
ANSWERb
An elephant sanctuary in New England
T here is an actual non-profit elephant sanctuary in the United States, but it is not located in New England. Instead, it is located in Hohenwald, TN. It was founded in 1995 and takes in elephants retired from zoos and circuses. The sanctuary provides a natural habitat, minus the normal predators, for the elephants. This sanctuary houses anywhere from 10 to 24 elephants and has a welcome center where guests can learn about the elephants there and their personalities. The sanctuary takes care of sick elephants and studies their behavior. Guests cannot actually see the elephants but they do talk to the behavior specialists and other staff and they can watch videos of the elephants in the sanctuary.
Question #2
What happened to Jennas mother that led to her disappearance?
- She was taken while patronizing a bar in town
- She left to go to the grocery store and never returned
- She just wasnt in the house in the morning, nor was she at work.
- There was an accident at the sanctuary that left her injured and she was rushed to the hospital.
ANSWER d
There was an accident at the sanctuary that left her injured and she was rushed to the hospital
J enna was very young when the accident occurred in the sanctuary and she does not remember much of it. She does remember that her mother was working with an elephant and was severely injured. She was unconscious and staff transported her to the hospital. She got to the hospital alive, but disappeared into thin air. At the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee there was an actual accident where a staff member was injured and subsequently died from her injuries. An elephant got out of hand and crushed her and also injured another staff member in 2006. Her wish was to be buried at the sanctuary and she was.
Question #3
How does Jenna know so much about her mother and her mothers work, if she disappeared when Jenna was so young?
- She has her mothers notes and journals she kept at the sanctuary
- She gets the information from her grandmother
- She gets the information from her father
- She gets the information from other staff members at the sanctuary
ANSWER a
She has her mothers notes and journals kept at the sanctuary.
J ennas mother, Alice, was an elephant behaviorist at the sanctuary and she kept notes and journals about the elephants there. She had volumes of journals containing all her research.
Her particular field of study was elephants and how they dealt with grief. According to scientists, elephants do feel grief. A mother elephant who has a baby that dies may carry around and hold on to the dead baby for days before she will let it go. Because of this research and notes on her mothers studies, Jenna knows her mother would never abandon her.
Question #4
Where was Jennas father while she was growing up?
- Traveling in South Africa
- Off looking for Alice
- In a psychiatric hospital
- He was a truck driver and was never home
ANSWER c
In a psychiatric hospital
J ennas father lost touch with reality when his wife had the accident and disappeared. He was placed in a psychiatric hospital and was never the same. Jenna lives with her grandmother who has a very bad attitude about Alice. She believes Alice abandoned them and wont even talk about her or acknowledge she ever existed. Trauma can affect people in different ways. The loss of Alice made her husband snap and go off the deep end. It affected Jennas grandmother by her refusal to accept and talk about the problem. Alice was alive when taken to the hospital but disappeared soon after. The trauma could be from loss, but also from the feeling of abandonment.
