LEAVING TIME
L
EAVING TIME IS A NOVEL written by Jodi Picoult. It was published by Ballantine Books in October 2014. There is also an audio version of Leaving Time that was published by Random House Audio. It is roughly fifteen hours long. The narrators for the audio book are Kathe Mazur, Rebecca Lowman, Abigail Revasch, and Mark Deakins. It is categorized in the following genres: Genre Fiction, Literature & Fiction, Womens Fiction, Contemporary, Thrillers & Suspense, Psychological Thrillers, Mystery, and Family Saga. It is available as hardcover, eBook, audiobook, and audio CD. The hardcover publication of Leaving Time is written in English and is 416 pages long. It is written in the first person point of view and is told in both past and present tenses.
This book takes place in present time. There are two settings, New England and South Africa. The central themes throughout this novel are loss, grief, and motherhood. Jenna Metcalf is the antagonist and Alice Metcalf, Jennas mom, is the protagonist.
Leaving Time takes a deeper look into how mothers and daughters interact with one another, no matter what the species. Neither mother nor daughter is complete without the other one there.
About ten years ago Jennas mom disappeared. No one had any idea or explanation for her disappearance. Jenna is determined though, and wont stop searching until she finds her. Jenna remembers her mother leaving, but she does not recall any details. She describes it as a blur.
Jenna has searched for her mother for a long time. She was not yet 13 when she began her search. In her research, she has discovered that her mom left when Jenna was a toddler. There was some sort of accident at the elephant sanctuary where her mom worked one night, and her mom was found there. She was taken to the local hospital because she was unconscious. Because her father had a hard time dealing with it, Jenna went to live with her grandmother. While at the hospital is when her mother disappeared, though no one seems to know when, where, how, or why. She has not been seen or heard from since.
Before her mom disappeared, Jenna was a fun-loving child without a care in the world. But since then not surprisingly, she has changed and is no longer that same person.
Jenna is essentially on her own looking for her mom. She has no help from her grandmother or her dad. Her grandmother believes that Jennas mom left on purpose, and therefore refuses to talk about her, and her dad fell apart after her moms disappearance. But Jenna refuses to give up.
Working with elephants was Jennas moms job. Specifically, she was interested in how they responded when another elephant was injured or died. She took lots of notes about her work. Those are the notes Jenna keeps close and reviews in hopes that something in them will help her find her mom. This is how she remembers her. It helps her remember when her mom would talk to her about lifes problems and all about science. One of the life lessons her mom taught her was to follow her gut. Jenna believes in her gut that her mom is still alive, and that is why she is so determined to find her.
Jenna is convinced that her mom wouldnt just disappear and leave her all alone. Her moms work papers are never far away and she never stops looking for evidence involving her mothers disappearance.
During her search, Jenna stumbled across a missing persons website, and found the information about her moms disappearance. However, it sits exactly as it was when the data was first input. Nothing has been added or changed since that day.
As is common these days, Jenna relied on the internet to try to find out anything about her mother. There was such a plethora of information that Jenna had a hard time deciding where she should look first. Feeling overwhelmed, she altered her initial search parameters and found something interesting. It was an article about elephants and death. Jennas mom was quoted in the article. The interesting part was that this particular article had been published after her moms disappearance.
Eventually, Jenna decided to consult a psychic to try and help find her mom. She is not sure whether the psychic is for real and begins regretting her decision to try it. Jenna heard this psychic was supposed to do a great job but she quit doing it. Jenna decides to convince the psychic to help her anyway.
Although Jennas dad and grandmother are of no help, she turns to a psychic and the lead detective that worked the case when her mom first vanished. She has support from them, but there are questions that arise in the course of the investigation that reveal answers that are hard for Jenna to hear.
Interesting fact:
