About the Authors
Dr Patricia Macnair is a physician working part-time in Medicine for the Elderly at Milford Hospital in Surrey, UK. Ever since she was a teenager reporting for her college magazine, she has had an interest in journalism and this continued with work for BBC Radio while she studied Medicine at the University of Bristol. After qualifying in 1982, Trisha worked for several years in a variety of specialities within hospital medicine, before rekindling her early interest in writing and radio.
For the past 17 years she has worked as a freelance medical journalist and broadcaster, writing, reporting and presenting on health for BBC Radio, BBCi Health (the BBC Health website), and a number of TV programmes. Trisha has written many articles for national newspapers and magazines, and in recent years has had a number of books published. These include a series of childrens books on the human body, a workbook for health professionals, and a fun guide to living longer.
In 2001 Trisha completed an MA in Medical Ethics and Medical Law at Kings College, University of London, and in 2005, after a long spell out of clinical work, she returned to the hospital wards. There her patients present a myriad of different medical problems during their rehabilitation after major illness.
In those rare moments between working and looking after a busy family, she relaxes by playing guitar in a rock band, and forlornly striving to improve her tennis.
Dr Carolyn Dean is a rare breed of medical doctor. She is one of a handful of doctors who has received dual degrees in medicine and naturopathic medicine and bridges the gap between the two. Dr Dean graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in Nova Scotia in 1978. She is also a graduate of the Ontario Naturopathic College and is presently on the board of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, Canada.
Dr Dean is licensed to practice medicine in California, but her base is in New York, where she publishes, writes, consults, and travels frequently to present rousing lectures to eager listeners on health and wellness issues.
In her private practice, which she ran for 12 years in Toronto (from 1979 to 1992), Dr Dean treated thousands of patients who came to her with symptoms of IBS. Having seen similar symptoms in her own family and she, herself being sensitive to wheat and dairy, Dr Dean understands the impact of diet, exercise, and stress on the bowel.
Dr Dean has written many books, including Natural Prescriptions for Common Ailments, Menopause Naturally, Homeopathic Remedies for Childrens Common Ailments, The Miracle of Magnesium, Death by Modern Medicine, and Hormone Balance. She has also co-authored Womens Book of Natural Health and The Yeast Connection and Womens Health. She is an advisor to Natural Health magazine and the medical advisor for www.yeastconnection.com. Dr Dean is a regular guest on TV and radio, appearing many times on The View as well as Fox, CBS, and NBC, and she has her own radio show.
Christine Wheeler has been a freelance researcher and writer for 15 years. For the past seven years, she has focused mainly on health and medical topics, including extensive research on the health benefits of nutritional products. She has especially enjoyed providing writing and editorial support to Dr Dean on various book projects.
