Introduction

Losing weightdoesnt have to be difficult. In this book we look at ChineseMedicine as Food Therapy, how it can be used to assist in losingweight, changing our eating habits and replacing them with goodeating habits. Also there are valuable Western methods that I havedeveloped and I tie it in to the ancient Chinese knowledge.

This bookcontains all the information I used to lose more than 44 pounds (20kilograms). It is ideal to have a balance of diet and exercise forthe best results. Having said that it can be hard to begin exercisewhen you may feel self conscious, having a lack of energy or dontknow where to start. It is my belief that by changing your diet yougain energy and this is motivating to begin some form of exercise. You can use what you learn in this book as a guide to your weightloss goals.

ChineseMedicine has been around for thousands of years. It is a holisticapproach to health and interestingly for us, food is considered atherapy to aid in the healing of illness, to stay healthy, avoidgetting sick and lose weight through proper eating. Chinese Medicine dieting is more of a lifestyle change and isthe only way to keep the weight off. The Chinese people havea long and rich history and developed a sophisticated medicalsystem when other parts of the world had only basic knowledge. While Western Medicine as we know it today is highly advanced,Chinese Medicine had a few thousand years to perfect. I would liketo point out the different types or parts of Chinese Medicine andhow food therapy fits in. First you may be familiar withAcupuncture or even experienced it. It is the insertion of metalneedles into specific points of the body. The needles stimulate Qiand blood flow to aid healing. Acupuncture is used for moreexternal illnesses or injuries like sports injuries. Chinese HerbalMedicine is used for more internal problems that effect organs. Itis a formula of herbs chosen for the healing properties. We allknow the benefit of exercise and how it can be used as a therapywith Tai Chi, Qi Gong and martial arts the more traditional Chineseexercises. Massage and meditation are forms of therapy for theChinese that most people are familiar with today. That leaves uswith food as a therapy. The ancient Chinese devised a system forclassifying food and gave it properties. We will use this knowledgethrough out this book as it is just as valid today as it was twothousand years ago.

In Westernculture today we are all familiar with the benefits of Massage, TaiChi, Meditation and Acupuncture, to a lesser extent Chinese HerbalMedicine, but what about Chinese Food Therapy? I aim to show youthe benefits of a healthy diet through the eyes of ChineseMedicine, accompanied with newer techniques that are more Westernand how to use this knowledge to assist in shedding those extrapounds and in the process, changing eating habits.

Chapter 1

Causes ofWeight Gain

The cause ofweight gain for most of us (not including illness) includelifestyle, timing, poor eating habits, eating the wrong food due tocravings and proportion size of food. Throughout this book I willaddress each cause and what can be done about it. I believeemotions play a part in weight gain as well and related to that ispossibly low self confidence. When you are losing weight and eatingmore healthy foods it makes you feel physically and mentally betterabout one-self.

The purpose ofthis book is to change eating habits so ask yourself now, do youreally want to change your life and lose weight?

BeginningGoal

Any dietprogram has one main goal, to lose weight. While this is obvious itcan be daunting and demoralising if we dont see immediate results. The best way to tackle a daunting task is to break it down intosmaller, easier to handle goals that work towards our main weightloss. For example I had the main goal of losing 44 pounds (20kilos) so I broke that down into four by 11 pound (5 kilo) minigoals. 11 pounds is a lot easier to focus on and more manageable asit can be achieved in a shorter time period. At the end of each 11pound weight loss, I had four successful and completed mini goalswhich were motivating.

What step doyou find yourself at below? It is a good start to get an idea whichstep you are at and what is to come next in the process. The listdoesnt have to be fixed and you can add to it if you like.

I have brokenthe goal of losing weight into 7 easy to follow steps.

1. Make adecision to lose weight

2. Define howmuch weight to lose (could involve a Doctor consultation)

3. Learn aboutweight management

4. Setrealistic time frame

5. Implementweight loss ideas into our lives

6. Exercise(optional but recommended)

7. Re-assessresults, grateful for results, repeat successful methods, aim to dobetter and keep new good habits.

Decision toLose Weight

If you havebought this book then the chances are you have made the decision tolose weight. We all get set in our ways and it is easy to fall intounhealthy habits. Sometimes our lifestyles dont leave much timefor change because we are on the run, working 50 hour weeks or busyraising children. What ever your case you can work the informationfrom this book into your life starting today.

How Much Weightto Lose

How much weightwould you like to lose? This will be different for everyone butwrite the number down, store it in your phone as a reminder orwrite it on your hand often. As soon as you write it down itbecomes real as opposed to having a number floating around in yourhead that is easy to forget. With the number you come up withconsider breaking it up into smaller parts like I did, I broke the44 pounds up into 4 manageable parts. I found this easier tomanage, easier to obtain results and motivating. 44 pounds soundeddaunting to me, 11 pounds sounded do-able.
