INTRODUCTION
S tatistics is a powerful mathematical tool for designing an experiment, collecting data, describing data, and interpreting data. We are accustomed to seeing statistics every dayweather reports, political polls, advertising claims, classroom grade reports, and so on. However, many people find statistics confusing and intimidating. CliffsNotes Statistics and Probability Common Core Quick Review is intended to clarify some of the fundamentals of statistical reasoning to make informed decisions about raw data in everyday scenarios. The format is simple, and there are many examples to help you translate abstract data into concrete applications.
Your knowledge of arithmetic operations is fundamental to the topics presented in this book. If you feel that your knowledge of arithmetic requires further review, refer to CliffsNotes Basic Math and Pre-Algebra Quick Review.
Connecting Statistics to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM)
CliffsNotes Statistics and Probability Common Core Quick Review topics are aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM)the skills you should know and be able to perform. Statistics and probability concepts presented in this book make connections to other Common Core mathematics topics. Our goal is to help you become an advanced critical thinker so that you can make logical connections between the topics presented in the book and topics related to the CCSSM. This guide gives you procedural approaches to analyze numerical and categorical data in your daily life and to make meaningful interpretations that will support your conclusions in real-world scenarios.
Use the following guidelines in the practice of Common Core Mathematics statistics and probability topics:
Make sense of problems, persevere in solving problems, and continue to monitor and evaluate your progress.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively to describe relationships between variables of categorical and quantitative data.
Construct viable arguments and analyze your reasoning as you deconstruct, organize, and make sense of problems.
Justify your plausible conclusions and clarify your inferences from the categorical and quantitative data.
Model with mathematics by using probability to evaluate outcomes of decisions.
Use appropriate electronic tools (e.g., electronic calculators, software, or any other technology) to compute and interpret statistical data.
Attend to precision as you carefully check your own reasoning.
Look for and make use of structural patterns in the data presented in graphs, charts, and tables from sample surveys, experiments, and studies.
Look for and express statistical reasoning regularly to improve your proficiency.
