Taking these practice tests will give you a good idea of what youll encounter when you take the real exam. Youll learn about the test structure and content, youll familiarize yourself with the directions for each question type, and youll get a good idea of how well you are currently prepared for the actual GRE.

What Is the GRE General Test?
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is required for entry by most college and university graduate programs. The General Test covers basic verbal and quantitative skills. There are also GRE tests in various specific subjects, which are required by certain graduate programs.

All of these exams are created and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). For complete information, including instructions for registering to take the exams, visit www.gre.org. Starting in August 2011, the GRE General Test format is substantially revised. The tests in this book follow the format of the revised GRE General Test. The following sections describe the features of this new test format.

    Test Structure and Format
The revised GRE General Test, administered starting in August 2011, has two formats: a computer-based test and a paper-based test.
    Test Structure and Format
The revised GRE General Test, administered starting in August 2011, has two formats: a computer-based test and a paper-based test.

The computer-based test is offered in the United States, Canada, and many other countries. The paper-based test is offered in areas of the world where computer-based testing is not available. The revised GRE General Test has three parts: Analytical Writing (2 tasks). In this part of the test you will write two short essays in response to prompts provided. One essay will analyze an issue and the other will analyze an argument. Verbal Reasoning (2 sections).

The questions in this part cover reading comprehension, vocabulary, and other verbal skills. Many test your ability to analyze complex concepts and ideas. Quantitative Reasoning (2 sections). The questions in this part cover a wide range of math skills. Some problems are word problems with real-life scenarios; others are straight calculations. Many test your ability to reason logically using important math concepts.

The computer-based test is partly computer adaptive. This term means that at certain points in the test, the computer decides what questions to give you based on your performance thus far. Specifically, if you perform well on the first Verbal Reasoning section, the computer will give you a second Verbal Reasoning section that is more difficult than the one you would have gotten if you had not performed well. The same procedure is followed for the two Quantitative Reasoning sections. Within each section, however, the test is not computer adaptive; a specific set of questions is presented in a specific order. Within a section you are free to skip questions or move forwards or backwards through the question order as you wish.

On the computer-based test, you are provided with an on-screen calculator. It will help you particularly when the problems require time-consuming calculations. For many problems, however, simple reasoning will be more effective than attempting lengthy calculations, so you should use the calculator only when truly necessary. For the practice tests in this book, keep a calculator handy and use it when appropriate. The following charts show the formats of the computer-based and paper-based revised GRE General Test.
