ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to thank the many nutrition experts who have shared their thoughts with me during the writing of this book: Leigh Broadhurst, Lee Carter, Clara Felix, Parris Kidd, Richard Kunin, Brian Leibovitz, Barbara Marquette, Mark McCarty, Jeffrey Moss, Dileep Sachan and Jerry Schlesser. Linda Lizotte did a great job offering helpful comments during the preparation of the final manuscript. I am particularly indebted to Loren Cordain for sharing his thoughts with me as I went through his Paleolithic nutrition library and for helping me sharpen the Paleolithic section of this book.
I would also like to thank Sue Radcliffe for her sharp eye and invaluable help during the final preparation of this manuscript. Her proofreading gifts and her many valuable comments allowed me to bring my thoughts to you with the utmost clarity.
I would also like to thank my clients, who through the years have taught me more about carnitine and the power of Paleolithic nutrition than anyone else.

FOREWORD
As a researcher, clinician, and educator in the field of nutrition for the past twenty years, I continue to be astounded by the rapid growth of knowledge in this fieldknowledge from both the scientific journals and the clinical breakthroughs of practitioners. What excites me is that both of these areas are important. What disappoints me is that so few nutritionists seem to be familiar with both.
Robert Crayhon is an exception. He is an outstanding scholar as well as an experienced clinician, and he brings both of these important strengths to bear in creating one of the most important nutrition books of recent timesThe Carnitine Miracle. This remarkable book covers a lot of territory, and does so with clarity, brevity, and always with a sense of the clinical bottom line.
But why carnitine?
Carnitine is a remarkable nutrient that the body needs to make energy, and energy is the most important health-promoting force in the body. Carnitine is also a crucial heart-supporting nutrient. It is probably the most important nutrient to use for promoting weight loss. A special form of carnitine known as acetyl-L-carnitine has been found to slow the progression of Alzheimers disease and promote overall brain wellness. And, as Robert shows, carnitine has also been found helpful in treating a wide range of other health problems.
I am glad there is finally a book on this remarkable nutrient, and one that comes from someone who has spent the last twelve years both researching carnitine and using it in his clinical practice. Robert Crayhon has more experience with carnitine than anyone I know, and there is no one better to break the carnitine story. Armed with Roberts book, you can now unlock the power of this nutrient to help you lose weight, promote heart health, maximize brain health, and enhance your energy and overall well-being.
Yet this is more than just a book about the nutrient carnitine. It features a brilliant and succinct discussion of the Paleolithic dietwhat humans ate for 2.6 million years. There are many important nutritional lessons to be learned from studying this wide expanse of human nutrition, most notably: dont be afraid of protein, and do be afraid of modern refined foods. The Carnitine Miracle also discusses the benefits of eating both the right kinds and amounts of carbohydrates, fats, and protein. Roberts discussion of these dietary elements is excellent, and forms the background upon which he creates his eating plan, the Carnitine Program.
I am excited that Americans are interested in taking supplements and improving the quality of their diet. These are important strategies for disease prevention and enhancing quality of life. Yet how practical are the suggestions? How well will the patient follow the advice? And, most important of all, how well does the patient feel thirty to sixty days after starting the program?
While some in the health field claim to have achieved impressive results with strict nutritional regimes, few patients are able to follow them. What I appreciate about Roberts work as a clinician and author is that his suggestions are reasonable, easy to follow, and based on his work with actual patients. His assertion that carnitine and a diet based on Paleolithic Principles enhances health is not merely a theory; it is backed by his own vast clinical experience as well as the considerable number of references at the end of this book.
Yet as important as carnitine, energy, and the Paleolithic diet are, the most important idea Robert presents is the need for optimal health. I hope that after you read this groundbreaking book, you will understand that carnitine, the Paleolithic Principles, the flexible menu plans, and all of the other nutritional suggestions are designed to get you health that is not merely adequate, but optimal. To the degree this book succeeds in that goal, it will change your life forever for the better.

Note to the Reader
As a nutritionist, I have learned five things:
First, the most valuable thing you can give your cells is energy. Cells that run out of energy die before they should. This can lead to disease and premature aging. Cells that have an abundant supply of energy, however, live long and healthy lives. Because our cells run out of energy too quickly, we do not live as long as we should.
