It is hard to eat more than one pawpaw at a go. The creamy rich pulp with tropical flavors ranging from mango and pineapple to banana combine like a satisfying dessert.

The pawpaw, a close relative of the tropical custard apple, grows throughout much of North America yet culturally and horticulturally we know very little about it.
This mini manual by edible landscape author Michael Judd jumps right into growing, caring for, harvesting, and using pawpaws from seed to table. Judd demystifies fruit growing in direct, easy to follow steps that quickly brings confidence to the newbie grower while expanding the horizons of curious gardeners.
Historically most people have only experienced foraged pawpaw fruit, which can be a hit or miss game for a good experience. That is quickly changing as selected and bred cultivars are being grown and shared. Judd's pawpaw manual gets you started right away with the best selections and approaches.

Filled with straight forward how-to, colorful pictures and illustrations For the Love of Pawpaws brings to life easy and successful ways to enjoy the best pawpaws have to offer.

Welcome from the Judd Family of Long Creek Homestead I have had the good - photo 5

    Welcome from the Judd Family
    of Long Creek Homestead!

I have had the good fortune to live and grow fruit in many parts of the world, from the tropics to the temperate north, and I consider the North American pawpaw a favorite. Perhaps this is because the pawpaw fruit embodies the best of worlds with its tropical roots and northern hardiness.

Moving back home to the Appalachian foothill mountains of Maryland where pawpaws grow wildly and abundantly, I started planting select varieties of pawpaws. In five short years, big harvests were coming in and our 1 st Annual Long Creek Homestead PawPaw Festival was born. Quickly, we had over 500 people clamoring to try their first fruits. Wow!! The enthusiasm and excitement was palatable. I then realized we had a crossroads of culture and ecology just waiting to be explored.

    Welcome to the pawpaw adventure!

Enjoy the colorful, diverse world of the pawpaw!

    Introduction

    Would You Eat a Pawpaw?

The pawpaw is a cousin to the custard apple and cherimoya, the only member of the tropical sugar apple family living in the temperate north. Basically, the pawpaw is a tropical fruit tree that hitchhiked its way north as the continental glaciers receded at the end of the Ice Age. The pawpaw is now found growing indigenously, primarily throughout the eastern United States and very southeastern part of Ontario. This amazingly adaptive fruit tree has become so popular that it is being introduced into many other temperate regions of the globe.

The fruit of the pawpaw tree is intensely satisfying and nutritious. Indeed, it is challenging to eat more than one of these succulentdare I say, heavenlyfruits at a time. The creamy, rich pulp has tropical flavors reminiscent of mango, pineapple, and banana that combine together to create a satisfying dessert. Pawpaws can grow wild and they can also be cultivated. The type of pawpaw you choosewildly grown versus cultivatedwill make a difference in how luscious and tasty a dessert will be.

Historically most people have only experienced wild-growing pawpaw fruit - photo 8
