The Cancer Wellness Cookbook is a helpful resource for patients and their caregivers. More than a cookbook, it gathers information about biological interactions that been shown to affect cancer cells, and how certain foods may increase the bodys ability to fight disease and handle side effects from treatment. The recipes are designed to help encourage cancer patients to eat, with intriguing tastes and textures that can keep patients interested in food. The healthy focus is good for the entire family, and is a great direction for the after cancer lifestyle.

The Cancer Wellness Cookbook is an excellent resource that is current, concise, and informative. The tips to help minimize acute problems are relevant and the basic principles of healthy eating will aid in successful cancer survivorship. I applaud Cancer Lifeline, the authors, and many collaborators for creating a book that not only will help patients and families, but will serve as an excellent primer for health care professionals.

INTRODUCTION
N EW SCIENCE CONTINUES TO EMERGE THAT LINKS CANCER SURVIVAL , risk of cancer recurrence, and cancer prevention with diet and physical activity. This scientific evidence is so compelling that the American Cancer Society estimates that nearly one-third of all cancer deaths are related to these two factors.
Nutrition can have a significant impact on preventing cancer and may also have a role in fighting cancer once it has developed. Whats more, nutrition and other lifestyle factors may help lower cancer survivors chances of developing secondary cancers and having recurrences.
Because good nutrition is so important before, during, and after treatment, The Cancer Wellness Cookbook is primarily for people living with cancer and for cancer survivors. However, this book is also intended for anyone interested in a health-conscious diet. It sets the stage for a healthier lifestyle from which we all can benefit.
The first edition of the cookbook, which was published in 1996, was created because clients of Cancer Lifeline kept asking, So what do I eat now? Cancer patients are often confused about nutrition because they are encouraged to maintain their weighteven if that means eating a high-fat, high-sugar, low-fiber, low-nutrient diet.
While this may be necessary in some cases, current thinking tells us that its often possible to maintain weight on a diet that emphasizes healthy fats; quality, protein-rich foods; and high-fiber, nutrient-dense foods. These foods also help boost the bodys ability to fight disease.
In developing this latest edition of The Cancer Wellness Cookbook , we have updated the scientific information on the link between food and cancer and added a variety of delicious and healthy new recipes. Some of the nations top chefs have shared their favorite recipes with us to include in the book. Weve also added recipes from people in the community, cancer patients, cancer survivors, and people working in the cancer field.

Moreover, nutrition and healthy eating may promote survivorship and help prevent cancer recurrence.
