ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I found the motivation for the research leading to this book when I was student teaching at Grosvenor House Day Care Center on Manhattan's Upper West Side. I worked with the most dedicated people. Ursula Foster, as teacher, and Ellen Dublin, as administrator, provided the children a highly nurturing environment despite limited resources.
I was there only a brief time, but something of Grosvenor House has stayed with me all these years. I remember the children, especially Pauline, Jerry, Jamal, and Jose. I have always felt that the children of Grosvenor House deservedthat all children of America deservemore attention and better care. I set out to discover the reasons why our young people are not in the forefront of our lives but instead tucked away in hard-to-find corners.
