Preface
The mountains are calling, and I must go. John Muir
1958: We have been studying this weird guy John Muir in school. He used to hike around in the high mountains with only a blanket and a few biscuits, and today I got to see the trail that's named after him. Mom, Dad, and I are camping in Yosemite Valley, where Muir hung out a lot. This morning, Dad took me to Happy Isles, to the start (they call it the "trailhead") of the John Muir Trail. We stood there for what seemed like a long time, just staring at the trail sign, a big old iron thing with stenciled names and numbers that looked like it might have been around when that guy Muir first stood there. It listed nice-sounding places like Sunrise and Palisade Lakes, and incredible distances! "Mount Whitney: 212 miles." I can't imagine walking that far.
A couple of hikers carrying green backpacks and fishing gear came up from the parking lot. They stopped for a second to read the sign, then gave each other kind of strained smiles and headed up the trail with real determination. I watched them a long time. I couldn't help wondering, "Where are they going? How long will they be gone?"
