CONTENTS
Y OU ARE WHAT you eat is likely a statement you heard growing up. If your mother uttered that phrase, she may have been trying to persuade you to finish your vegetables. Still, Mom was rightto a degree. The statement is more accurately phrased: You are what you eat and what you are able to absorb. You can eat all the lima beans and green peas in the world, but unless your body can absorb the nutrients in these vegetables, they dont do you any good!
Like many other diseases in our culture, gastrointestinal disorders are on the rise. From ailments as common as heartburn to more serious problems, such as ulcers, acid reflux disease, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), your digestive system is under attack. In a manner similar to the immune system, the digestive system is your first line of defense against harmful agents in the world around you. All the nutrients your body takes in pass through the digestive system. It is therefore crucial to maintain gastrointestinal (GI) health and protect your body from attack.
You may think your digestive systems primary function is to digest food. True, yet the digestive system does much more for the body. There are four major processes of digestion that will be helpful to understand for protecting your health:
1. First, your body must digest food. You must take in the food and break it down into various tiny components the body can use for energy. 2. Your body must eliminate waste. It cant use every molecule of food, so it must sort out and remove substances that are not helpful or good. 3. Your body must absorb nutrients. Without absorbing the nutrition available in that food, you will literally starve to death. 4. Your body must normalize its balance of good bacteria in your intestines. Otherwise known as flora, these good bacteria must be present in the colon for your body to function properly.
All four of these processes must be operating successfully to prevent or treat gastrointestinal disorders. And this all takes place in the gut, sometimes called the second brain. You cant enjoy the benefits of good health without a healthy diet, proper digestion, and avoiding the foods that can lead to such gastrointestinal issues as irritable bowel diseases, inflammatory issues, poor food absorption, constipation, or leaky gut syndrome.
This is why a proper diet is so essential to a healthy gutand a healthy body. Digestion of food begins almost as soon as you eat it, but it only takes place in the presence of enzymes. The key enzymes for digestive health include 1) amylase enzymes, which break down carbohydrates; 2) lipase, which break down fats; and 3) proteolytic enzymes, which break down proteins. A deficiency in any of these enzymes can result in a host of uncomfortable digestive problems, such as gas, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation.
Without the proper amounts of enzymes necessary for digestion to take place, particles of food will pass through the body undigested and create these difficulties. However, a more serious effect of an enzyme deficiency is fatigue. If problems occur at the digestive stage, the body wont break down the food to the stage where the system absorbs it and provides nutrition to the cells. Consequently, your energy sources get quickly depleted, leaving you feeling tired all the time.
