Acknowledgments
It took the effort and dedication of many individuals to put together a business math book that really explains the subject in accessible terms, but most of all, this book could not have been written without the skills and expertise of our resident math whiz, Ian Mahaney.
The editors of Career Press would like to thank Ian for the time he took to develop a math book that will be an asset for any businesspersonor anyonewho needs to brush up on math skills. For those of us who worked on the book with Ian, we can actually say that math really can be fun!

Introduction The Importance of Math in Business
Page 10
Math plays an important role in many facets of our daily life. A good grasp of math will facilitate such transactions as buying a car, opening a checking account and balancing a checkbook, understanding the newspaper, or budgeting personal finances. In the business world, math is even more fundamental in that it helps you to understand sales, inventory, production schedules, payroll, and financial issues concerning your department or company. Math is so important in the business world that it's key to have a basic knowledge in order to survive. If you understand how to apply basic math functions to various aspects of your job as the need arises, you'll set yourself apart from your peers and you'll never be floundering when it comes to handling numbers. This book will help you learn the math that is essential to doing your job efficiently.
Chapters 1 through 4 address the four functions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. This is the math you learned in grammar school or high school, but may have since forgotten. Each of the first four chapters covers one of the four functions, offering

the basic techniques for solving each problem along with methods that will simplify the problem and save you time.
Chapter 5 deals with higher math, specifically techniques of estimation, algebra, and statistics. Learning each of these will enable you to work out further problems you encounter in your business life. Roots, exponents, fractions, decimals, and percents are also discussed, because a good grasp of these is also essential to managing the flow of numbers and documents containing them in your day-to-day business duties. Then in the last four chapters, you will learn to apply all the math you learned so far to specific business functions, such as calculating interest and interpreting financial statements, calculating payroll, and analyzing sales and inventory reports.
