Introduction
Golfers, no matter what their degree of expertise in the game, believe deep down that only one or two little things separate them from being able to play the game with the same skill as the best in the world.
A round where a few more putts go in the hole instead of lipping out, a handful of iron shots that fly true rather than miss the green, and each player feels he has truly arrived at a higher level, at least for that day.
As a young man, I lived across the street from a golf course. My favorite pastime was to go there and play three balls of different brands on each hole, along with my own, and keep score. One for Arnie, one for Jack, and one for Lee. At times I would add a foreign flavor and play a fourth ball for Gary. The greatest golfers in the world and I had some spirited matches as we played the deciding holes of the U.S. Open, The Masters, and the PGA Championship.
Golf is played on many different levels. Most everyone is familiar with the Professional Golf Association, the Senior Professional Golf Association, the Ladies Professional Golf Association, and the various other mini-tours that sponsor and organize professional golf tournaments. These moneypaying events put on by these ruling bodies are highly visible and covered extensively in the media, both television and in print.
The men and women who qualify to participate in these tournaments compete for cash, and a lot of it. Tournament prizes have evolved dramatically over the last forty years. Lew Worsham was number one on the official PGA money list for the year 1953. He won $33,807 for the entire year.
