Grandmas food, Grandmas words of wisdom, Grandmas advice, Grandmas remedies. These notions are about devotion, love, and wisdom.
We love Grandmas food. We recall her words with a smile, and her advice and remedies often prove us right.
I do not intend to rule out conventional medicine, and this collection of Grandmas Remedies does not replace conventional pharmaceuticals. These remedies simply have the advantage of not being harmful while still being helpful.
We often get a prescribed medicine that has negative side effects. Nonetheless, if we look into it carefully, we will find out that, in addition to chemicals, many conventional medications contain natural ingredients. Grandmas Remedies are based on tradition. There is no guarantee that they will be of benefit to everyone, but conventional medications affect people differently as well.
Before turning to Grandmas Remedies, please make sure that your medical condition doesnt require the care of a specialist. Most of the recipes in this collection are based on ingredients that can be found in most homes and can be purchased in supermarkets. I purposely limited myself to handy and simple ingredients.
3. Allergy
Shortness of Breath
S hortness of breath can be very unpleasant. If you suffer from it, no matter the reason, you simply want to breathe fresh air easily.
Danny, the naughty son of our neighbor, always has a problem breathing. Whenever you meet his mother, she explains why he currently suffers from shortness of breath: dust in the summer, rain in the winter, heat waves in the spring and fall. Danny, on the other hand, doesnt care why; he just wants to breathe easily.
One day while Danny was in my house, snorting and trying hard to breathe, my uncle arrived. He is not just any ol uncle. He knows everything, and according to him, various allergies are the cause for all illnesses. On top of it, he happens to be a nice man who loves to help and give advice.
Lets go over to his mother and tell her what she should do, he ordered.
Who am I to say no?
My Uncles Advice:
In order to make it short, I decided to skip his opening remarks, which included What and Why.
Stop giving Danny milk for one week. If he is allergic to milk, the shortness of breath will stop. If not, keep him away from chocolate for a week. The results will determine if he is allergic to chocolate. If its not chocolate, he should not drink Coke for a week.
These are the three general things that we can be allergic to.
L ately, we have been witnessing a large wave of immigration from all over the globe. Juliet arrived in our building with her entire family. She is a quiet, pleasant woman from a suburb in France.
She was immediately welcomed by all the neighbors and fit in nicely, as if she was born here. Well, there is the language barrier and the foreign accent, but other than that, she blends well.
As far as Danny is concerned, he is also one of us. He hangs out with all the neighbors, with Juliet as well, especially since she is so nice and speaks with a funny accent.
Juliet also noticed Dannys shortness of breath. After a while, when she felt comfortable enough, she approached his mother and gently suggested a recipe that was popular in France and was used to cure shortness of breath.
Juliets Recipe:
Cut, carefully, a large quantity of nettle. Wash well in running water and let it dry in the sun. As soon as they are completely dry (to the point that they break when folded) put them in a plastic bag and mash with a rolling pin or a hammer. It should become powdery. Every day, boil 1 cup of water with one tablespoon of this powder, strain, and drink. Dont use an aluminum pot, only enamel, ceramic, or Pyrex.
I have mentioned the sandpit in our backyard, havent I? Its the most important place around our building, since its where we socialize. Thats where we all meet, share the most important issues with each other, and help each other solve our problems.
One day while we were sitting there, I asked, Tell me, what should you do when one gets a major attack of shortness of breath?
My grandmother had many difficulties breathing, said Juliet. Thats why I know many healing methods.
So what does one do? we asked.
Juliets Recipe for Emergencies:
Let one smell alcohol.
Chop up ice into small pieces and swallow without chewing.
S ee where things lead to? All I asked for was to spend 1 happy hour drinking coffee and chatting. On top of this pleasure, I learned a lesson in the wisdom of healing. My enthusiasm encouraged my new acquaintance to bring up the good old days of her childhood.
As it turns out, she had bad allergies as a child. She used to get shortness of breath when the citrus fruit blossomed. Dust brought sudden sneezing attacks. She remembers those days with chills. One day the entire family visited an aunt on a farm. They were happy and cheerful - until they arrived. As soon as they got out of the car, my acquaintance began to experienced breathing difficulties. She screamed, Im suffocating! Everyone panicked, but then realized that it was the citrus fruit blossom season. The only one who didnt panic was the aunt on the farm.
She ordered her husband, Please bring honey bread. As soon as it was brought in, she sliced a piece and ordered the girl, Chew.
I did as I was told, the neighbor told us, and, slowly but surely, I began to feel the air penetrating my lungs.
As soon as everyone calmed down, the aunt said, You have got to be kidding me; you know that one of your family members has bad allergies. How come you dont have honey bread handy?
We didnt know about this trick, replied Mom and Dad simultaneously. From that point on, they always used it, and I stopped suffering.
The Farmers Recipe:
As soon as you feel an allergy attack coming (any allergy), slice a large piece of honey bread. Take a bite and chew well. Chew for as long as you can without swallowing. Spit out the leftovers from your mouth and take another bite and continue chewing until you finish the bread. You should notice relief immediately.
