Preface
The Children's Song Index, 1978-1993 is a compilation of 2,654 songs derived from 77 books as indexed by Cumulative Book Index, 1977-1994, under the subject heading "Children's Songs." All the song books were selected based upon their availability to the authors. Their inclusion in this index was dependent upon the copyright dates falling within the specified range of years.
Intended Audience
The song books selected are intended for a juvenile audience. The index is designed for use as a reference tool by classroom teachers and music instructors, as well as public, school, church, and academic libraries.
Scope
The songs included reflect Western culture and are primarily in the English language, although other languages are represented. Many songs are familiar songs from childhood. The newer songs reflect current issues and concerns regarding secular and religious education and acculturation of all children.
Criteria for Inclusion
The song books selected were American works published between the years of 1977 and 1994. All are in English. Most books selected were made available to the authors by direct solicitation from the publishers. Books not available from publishers were requested and received through interlibrary loan from libraries in the United States. The song books contain both lyrics and scores, and consist of several songs within a single book. The one-song book, such as an illustrated version of a single song, has been excluded. While all songs included are appropriate for children, no other attempt has been made to be selective in the choice of songs to be indexed from each song book. Therefore, songs are not excluded that may be judged politically incorrect by current standards.
Arrangement
The index is arranged in the following manner: 1) "Song Title Index," a list of songs by title; 2) "First Line Index," a list of each song's first line; 3) "Subject Guide," a thesaurus of subject headings arranged by
Page viii
broadest term; and 4) "Subject Index." All subject headings are alphabetically listed in uppercase letters. Index to Children's Songs, compiled by Carolyn Sue Peterson and Ann D. Fenton (H. W. Wilson, 1979), was used as a guide for arrangement and format. Some subject headings were selected and implemented from this publication. These subject headings are terms and phrases universally used and understood by educators of children. However, new terms were created and included in the subject thesaurus of this publication that reflect contemporary usage.
In order to ensure a true alphabetical arrangement, initial articles, regardless of language, have been relocated to the end of the title or deleted in the song title index. "See also" references have been established for variant forms and wording of the same or similar song titles. In the first line index, entries are filed without regard to initial articles (e.g., "The little bells of Christmas say" follows "Little barefoot boy, running through the sand").
Each title or first line entry is followed by a numeric book code and page number, separated by a colon. For example:
There's a Cow in My Bedroom! 55:13
The title and full bibliographic citation for the book can be found by number in "Books Indexed," beginning on page ix.
A final word. Music enhances the learning experience, but without access to the vast number of songs published, educators and librarians have difficulty identifying, selecting, and using materials as they are needed for musical activities. The authors hope that this index will fill the need for information access.
