With the advent of big data technology, organisations worldwide are creating data exceeding terabytes in size. Due to the variety of data that it encompasses, big data always entails a number of challenges related to its volume, complexity and vulnerability. The need to manage cyber risks across an enterprise-inclusive of IT operations-is a growing concern as massive data breaches make news on an alarmingly frequent basis. The internet too has grown enormously over the past few years, consequently increasing the risk of many untoward cyber incidents that can cause irreparable loss to a corporate organisation. With a robust cyber risk management system now a necessary business requirement, organisations need to assess the effectiveness of their current systems in response to a dynamic and fast-moving threat landscape. This book goes beyond a mere response to cybercrime and addresses the entire crisis-management cycle. The authors have created a primer for corporate houses and individuals alike on how they should deal with cyber incidences and develop strategies on tackling such incidences.

CONTENTS

It all began with a thought on cyber security and cyber management in the fall of 2017. I was vacationing in Obersalzberg, a small German town, very close to the countrys border with Austria. My genuine excitement to write on this subject made me call my close friend and business partnerRodney D. Ryder. Rodney is known to be an authority on this subject and it was natural for me to have called him. I was standing on one leg (literally!) while making this call and to my great happiness, Rodney agreed.

Our first task was to prepare an outline that would give the book a non-legal perspective. Our idea was to bring about a business-friendly, easy-to-understand book on this vital issue that is prevalent today and will remain so as long as computers exist on this planet.

With the outline and the synopsis ready, it was time for us to take upon ourselves the arduous task of finding a good publisher. After facing a couple of rejections, which was disappointing, we finally got the confirmation from one of the best in the publishing worldBloomsbury. People from all walks of life, old and young, including crazy Harry Potter fans, will have come across books published by Bloomsbury, and both of us felt elated when the folks from Bloomsbury agreed to our proposal.

Then came the difficult task of putting our ideas on paper and getting into the grind of writing this manuscript, which, in our humble opinion, has not been attempted in India. Our mutual lifelong love for business strategy and our interest in the military history of the Second World War helped us in writing the chapters. During our discussion, Rodney envisioned that he wanted us to write a book that would not only be read by the CEOs and the CTOs of the organisation, but also by business managers, who need to develop skills vis--vis cyber crisis management in the digital agean age which is becoming even more digital and vulnerable. The book, he suggested, should be a primer on the next corporate challenge of how to handle cyber incidences, of how to develop tactics to secure an organisation from cyberattacks, and on the relationship between cyber security and new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing.

Today, on my birthday, when we have finally finished writing this book after several painstaking reviews along with our group of researchers, I genuinely hope that you, the reader, find this an interesting read.

Any book written by an author is a collaborative effort of like-minded individuals with the sole aim to write good content that is easy to understand and comprehend. Over the last many months, we have been fortunate to get valuable inputs, suggestions and foundational research from across the length and breadth of India.

Among the many young, old and smart people that we have interacted with in the past 24 months, who gave their time generously and provided their wisdom to this effort, we wish to thank (in alphabetical order):

Debarghya Mitra, Garima Punjabi, Manisha Gupta, Mobina Ali, Prakarsh Seth, Ritu Chopra, Sattik Rout and Sohini Mukherjee.

In addition to those mentioned earlier, we wish to thank Vidisha Joshi, who helped us during the first drafts of the book and aided us in fishing through the voluminous content; she managed the research team remotely (yes, you read that correctly!) from Bengaluru and her hometown of Korba, Chhattisgarh.

We also cannot thank enough the members of the team at Bloomsbury for standing by us for the past two years. Praveen Tiwari, Nitin Valecha and Shreya Chakraborti have helped us thoroughly during the final months of writing the book.

We come now to the one individual without whose help this book would have gone nowhere. Debasmita Haldars extraordinary contribution to this book in the form of research and putting things in the right perspective was truly amazing. This book would not have been possible without her. It is generally said that authors burn the midnight oil to produce good work; but in our case, we can safely mention that Debasmita stood by us like a rock during the entire process of writing this book.

Finally, we want to thank our immediate families for their support during our long two-year effort to complete this book.

In the past 15 years, the Internet has transformed our lives to a great extent. In fact, it has become an essential part of our daily lives. However, with an increase in technological advancements in the area of the Internet, the amount of illicit activities relating to cyberspace has multiplied as well. Cyber-security breaches, such as data breaches and various other cybercrimes, have plagued the Internet since the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century.
