Early praise for Build Location-Based Projects for iOS

This book is for every iOS developer who wants to dive deeper into location-based technologies by working on real-world projects using practical examples. Id highly recommend it to any aspiring iOS developer.

Marcus Kida
CEO, Bearologics UG

This book takes a hands-on approach to Apples CoreLocation framework, explaining its core features using actual projects built in different technologies. Youll get to use programmatic layouts, storyboards, and even some SwiftUI. And, of course, you will learn how to make good use of location services on iOS to build rich apps for your users. Really well written.

Donny Wals

This book not only gets you amazingly up to date with all the great ways of using location and the various hardware related to movement in iOS, it is also a great way of seeing the three different approaches of building user interfaces: Storyboard, UIKit in Code, or SwiftUI. You wont regret buying this book; you might even buy one for a friend!

Manuel Carrasco Molina
Apple Technologist

Nothing less than thrilling examples, a playful deep dive into core iOS programming, and an insight into various techniques of building apps. Pure fun to read and learn.

Klaus Rodewig
Founder and Hacker, Appn UG

Everyone at the Pragmatic Bookshelf, thank you for helping me write this book. I dreamed about this for a very long time, and now its true. Im so happy and proud.

Thank you, Adaobi Obi Tulton, for all your help and great suggestions. The book is so much better because of it, and it was a blast to work on this with you.

Thank you, Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt, for making me a better programmer and for creating The Pragmatic Bookshelf. I am very grateful to be part of it.

A big thank you to my technical editors, Manuel Carrasco Molina, Scott Davis, Jeff Kelley, Marcus Kida, Kilian Koeltzsch, Nathan Mattes, Klaus M. Rodewig, Sven Schmidt, Jeremy Sydik, and Donny Wals. Without you the book would not be half as good. Especially, thank you, Jeremy Sydik, for pointing out some major flaws in the first draft.

Thank you, Isa. You are the best wife on earth! Thank you for tolerating me during this time (and in general). Im sorry that I often didnt listen properly because I was thinking about the book. Thank you, my two children, for your patience when I was busy writing just one more sentence.

Introduction

Learning new skills works best when its fun. You dive deeper and deeper. Hours pass and you cant stop reading and experimenting.

But theres also the outside world. And theres the feeling you have after a nice walk in the woods. Wouldnt it be cool if you could combine learning about iOS development with being outside?

This book features four inspiring projects you get to test outside. Youll draw on a map by moving in the real world, measure the length of a swing while swinging, measure how long someones outside, and share augmented reality views. As we build these projects, well also be looking at the three main approaches to constructing user interfaces: storyboards, code, and SwiftUI.

Who This Book Is For

This book is for developers who already have rudimentary experience with iOS development and want to learn about GPS, sensors, and ARKit. And even if you already have experience with location-based tools, the projects in this book might give you new ideas for your own apps.

I assume that you already have Xcode installed and know the basics about its structure. If you have worked through a beginners book or other beginner resources, you are perfectly prepared to work through the projects in this book. The first three chapters, in particular, cover in detail what you have to do in Xcode to follow along.
