Foreword

Preston So is nothing if not thorough.

Where most people would be happy to speak more than one or two languages, Preston decided hed go ahead and learnas far as I can tellall of them. If you ask him for a restaurant recommendation, hell send you a full-fledged guide to dining out in New York. Ive never seen Preston phone it in on a project. Hes always fully engaged and ready to dive deep into whatever hes up against.

This book is no exception.

This is the first comprehensive book about Gatsby on the market. True to his nature, Preston nails the journey from initial exploration to deep understanding in a thorough, approachable manner.

Gatsbys part of the rise of the Jamstack architecture, and its been cool to see the community embrace and expand the capabilities of the Jamstack over the last few years. Weve seen Gatsby grow beyond a static site generator and become a full-fledged app-development tool. Were seeing everything from ecommerce stores to app dashboards to the ordering kiosks at fast food restaurants adopt the Jamstack, and many of those projects are powered by Gatsby.

Im watching more and more of the largest companies out there adopting the Jamstack as a more scalable, maintainable, and cost-effective approach to building and shipping frontends at scale. If youre new to the Jamstack approach to building websites, welcome! Youre arriving at a great moment!

But Im off on a tangent; lets get back to Gatsby, Preston, and why this book is great.

Gatsby is a tough thing to teach. To really understand it, we need to dig into the technologies behind Gatsby, like React and GraphQL. The supporting technologies that power Gatsby are big enough topics to cover that each one has its own book (or, in the case of React, an entire wing of the bookstore) dedicated to teaching it.

Many folks who teach Gatsbymyself includedwill start our introductions by saying, Youll need at least a basic understanding of the underlying tools before we start. We just assume that someone has enough familiarity with these tools that we can skip ahead. Thats the beauty of a good abstraction: it lets people be productive without needing to know the things that have been abstracted away.

But being able to use Gatsby is only the beginning. Anyone can use a tool, but a craftsperson understands the tool. That understanding unlocks possibilities that are otherwise hidden from view. The really interesting stuff happens when people who deeply understand their tools start to apply those tools to hard problems.

This book is a clearly marked map from zero to understanding. Whether youre looking to create your first ever Gatsby site or trying to gain deep insights into how to customize Gatsby for your specialized requirements, this book will get you where you want to go.

So tuck in, my friends! I cant wait to see what you build with your new knowledge!

Preface

Of all the technologies to emerge in the web development industry in recent years, perhaps none has generated as much attention and excitement as Gatsby, a static site generator based on React. Though Gatsby is touted for its ease of use, performance benefits, and versatility for use cases both simple and complex, its equally vaunted for its developer experience advantages thanks to its use of GraphQL and high degree of extensibility.

When I first discovered Gatsby in 2017, the idea of the Jamstack, the architectural paradigm of which Gatsby is a prominent part, was still in its infancy. The concept of synthesizing new performance optimizations in browsers with a statically generated site hadnt yet taken the web development world by storm. In the years since, the pattern into which Gatsby fits has become a popular strategy emulated by other ecosystems in the JavaScript and static site generator landscape.

I also have a personal connection to Gatsby, having joined the core framework team and company in 2019 to lead product management for Gatsby Cloud, the hosting infrastructure underpinning many Gatsby sites. As of this writing, Gatsby has one of the most active and knowledgeable open source communities in existence, and Im excited to see whats ahead in Gatsbys future. By the end of this book, you will be too!

Who Should Read This Book

Gatsby: The Definitive Guide is a book that is intended to serve not only as an introduction to beginning, intermediate, and advanced use cases for developers working with Gatsby but also as a holistic reference to use while building Gatsby sites. To that end, it aims to be both edifying and exhaustive without veering too far to either extreme.

This book is intended for anyone in the web development world who is looking to work with Gatsby, whether you have experience with React or not. Though knowledge of JavaScript is helpful, many of the concepts that undergird Gatsby are understandable to those who have only previously worked in HTML and CSS, and Gatsby: The Definitive Guide provides a full introduction to the Jamstack pattern and an abridged primer on React and modern JavaScript.

If youre a web designer, a web developer, or even a programmer with limited knowledge of modern web development practices, this book is an ideal way to get started with Gatsby. But it also has plenty of new information for those already well versed in Jamstack and JavaScript technologies. And if youre looking to modernize your skill set in preparation for the coming decade of the web, this book is an excellent way to learn one of the technologies at the vanguard of frontend development.
