To my Dad. I miss him every day! He left for heaven in November 2020 due to a stroke. He had retired 10 years back from a top government organization, BHEL, as a senior engineer. He always was the pillar in my life. I hoped to spend more time with him, but life had some other plans.

This is the first in a series of eight chapters in which you will learn how to create a personal blog site with MDX, a format that lets you use React components in markdown files. Here, well complete the basic setup for the project, and create different pages, the navbar, and a footer with styling.

By the end of the book our web app will contain the following elements:
  • A home page similar to dev.to with a navigation feature in the top menu (Chapter ).

  • Blogs that expand the whole page like medium, which are easy to read (Chapter ).

  • All blogs have tags, which can be used to retrieve all similar blog entries (Chapter ).

  • A search capability to search all blogs (Chapter ).

Other features will include the following:
  • This project will be completely open source.

  • This site will be completely advertisement-free and free from any malicious scripts.

About DEV

I have also done some domain hunting and finally purchased thewebdev.tech . So, this site will be called The WebDev , because as most of you know, today the Web is everything and everything is the Web. One of the main features that attracted me to this site is the ease with which writers can publish their posts and give canonical links (Figure ). Canonical links are very important for Google, as they tell Google the original source of the article. Now I post on Medium, my personal blog, and DEV, and always provide canonical links to my personal blog. This is very important so that Google will not think you copied your article from somewhere else.

Easy canonical link

If they are open source, then why would I want to re-create it? The dev.to site is built on a React front end and Ruby or rails on the back end with PostgreSQL. Now, I know a good bit of React but not Ruby or rails.
