CHAPTER ONE
WHAT KDP SELECT CAN DO FOR YOU
What is Freebie Day by KDP Select?
KDP Select is a program implemented byon-line seller Amazon.com that allows independentauthors and publishers to enroll their ebooks into Amazons Kindlelending program. For each ebook borrowed by an Amazon Primemember, the author gets a share of a pot of some $600.000.
KDP Select offers you a choice: You can bean unknown author, with few book sales or an author who promotes, with few book salesuntil you are well known. Promotion establishesthe book, the author, and the brand. Only then do good things startto happen.
Amazon provides your book with worldwideavailability. Your book is listed free. You must promoteyour book to free-ebook download sites, your own ezine list, blog, etc.; alert your readers to the free book.
When you make any of your titles exclusiveto the Kindle Store for at least 90 days authors, with US rights, are automatically included in the Kindle Owners Lending Library(KOLL) and you will earn your share of a monthly fund when readersborrow your books from the library.
The monthly fund was $500,000 or $600,000each month for 2012.
You may continue to distribute your bookelsewhere in physical format, or in any format other than digital, during the KSP Select 90-days promotion periods. See http://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/KDPSelect
There is very little information on KDPSelect and those who have written about their experiences seem tospeak in generalities. This book provides numbers. You want to knowif KDP Select Freebie day is worth your time and effort. You wantto know how much and when.
This book is short for two reasons:
1st. I do not want to waste your time withfluff.
2nd. It cites URLs for more detail. Justclick on the URL for the source of the information. There is nogood reason to recite guidance second-hand.
The book you are reading is very specific.Today, many successful nonfiction books are targeting singleissues. This book is a good example of the book of tomorrow (andtomorrow started last Wednesday)
If you want to wring more value (money) outof your book, this book has some answers.
Fiction v nonfiction
Traditionally, nonfiction was easier to sellthan fiction because it was simpler to find the market forinformation. Today the Internet makes both fiction and nonfictioneasier to find.
Fiction has a larger market than nonfiction.Entertainment outsells information. It is rare for nonfiction tosell more than half a million copies. There are just so many peoplein the world interested in, for example, breeding Persian cats orlearning how to pack parachutes.
People buy nonfiction books to learnsomething or to solve a problem. When they look at a shelf in abookstore or online, they ask themselves, Will this book answer myquestion?
