Ferry across the Brazos
There had been a slight rise on the Brazos River that May morning in 1850, and by midafternoon the muddy current was tugging steadily at the little ferry crossing between the village of Waco and the river's east bank. But eleven-year-old Lawrence Sullivan Ross handled the ropes and pulleys expertly in spite of the increased current, using his wiry strength to bring the small, flat-bottomed craft skillfully to the Waco landing.
"Bye, Mr. Petry," the boy called, tying up as a horseman rode past him off the ferry. "Glad you had a good trip."
"Thanks for the smooth crossing, Sul." The rider checked his mount long enough to toss the boy a five-cent piece. "That's for yourself," the man said as he headed his horse up the steep bank toward the village at the top. "See you again soon."
Sul Ross dug into the pocket of his homespun britches and, pulling out a handful of coins, counted them. Two dollars and seventy-five cents... three dollars and ten cents... with the extra five cents, three dollars and fifteen cents. Sul grinned to himself and nodded so sharply that his black curls danced. "Just

wait until I tell Pete," he said to himself. "The last time he worked the ferry, he only took in fifty cents!"
His blue eyes sparkling in his delight at beating his older brother's most recent take, Sul shoved the coins back into his britches pocket and glanced both ways to see if there were any more possible customers for the ferry. There were none, and he drew a cooked sweet potato from his dinner pail and pulled a small booka life of Napoleon written for boysfrom the pocket of his hickory shirt. Perching cross-legged on a keg on the ferry landing, the boy bit into the sweet potato and opened his book.
