It is only in recent years that the wider maritime sector has started to attract the serious interests of the academic community and at long last we are beginning to see its inclusion in university prospectuses around the world and the publication of a range of high quality texts that deal with the different shipping and ports sectors and a range of geographical developments representing the diversity of the spatial market place.
However, much of the attention up to now has tended to focus upon either the ports industry, and in particular its management and operation, or the bulk and liner shipping sectors which have traditionally been the main activities of interest, partly through tradition and also because they have the longest historical base. This text, edited by Dr Funda Yercan at the School of Maritime Business and Management at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey, is a rare example of detailed and serious attention being paid to the ferry sector and begins to address the imbalance that exists within the maritime academic publishing world and the neglect that has been shown for this demanding and significant transport activity and the varied range of disciplines that its study and understanding requires of its students and operators.
This text brings together some of the world's leading experts in the analysis of the ferry industry and as a consequence will prove a valuable addition to the literature for both practitioners and students. Gernot Tesch of the University of Rostock in Germany, represents the long-standing interests of the Institute for Transport and Logistics in the passenger services market of the Baltic Sea with particular reference to those between Germany and Scandinavia and at a time of economic restructuring and social change. In a similar fashion, Professor Joanna Miotke-Dziegiel of the Institute for Maritime Transport and Seaborne Trade at the University of Gdansk, is the leading expert in Poland for passenger and freight ferry studies at a time of transition within Eastern Europe, with a specific interest m the Poland-Sweden-Finland market place.
Harry Heijvetd and Richard Gray provide a West European view upon ferry market developments with a focus upon the changes in the passenger car markets from the United Kingdom and along with John Dinwoodie, and his study of management training needs in the industry, together represent the strong focus upon the ferry industry that exists amongst the wider marine research specialisms, at the Institute of Marine Studies at the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom.
Finally, the editor of this text and author of a paper contrasting developments in the Eastern Mediterranean ferry sector, and detailing the relationship between political events in the Balkans and the need for ferry links between Turkey, Greece and the central European Union region, is Funda Yercan who has become indisputably the world's leading expert on ferry shipping in the Mediterranean and is active in developing research in this area and links between institutions throughout the academic community. It is only thanks to her perseverance and determination that this text has emerged, as co-ordinating research activities from four highly differentiated countries is certainly no easy task. Her enthusiastic inspiration and clear academic leadership is to be warmly admired and is only matched by her infectious good nature.
In addition, she has proved to be a close and generous colleague over the years whose time in Plymouth is remembered with pleasure and with whom close contacts between myself, the University in Plymouth and Izmir have been actively developed. I look forward to the development of further active research collaboration in the future which will continue to promote the role of ferry studies throughout the academic community.

After the completion of my doctoral study at the Centre for International Shipping and Transport, University of Plymouth, invaluable collaboration and encouraging suggestions of Professor Michael Roe has given me the opportunity to edit and publish this book.
It would have not been possible without the collaboration of my colleagues at the Institute of Marine Studies, University of Plymouth, in particular Professor Roe; Institute for Maritime Transport and Seaborne Trade, University of Gdansk and Institute for Transport and Logistics, University of Rostock. My other thanks must also go to Neal Toy formerly at the Institute of Marine Studies, who provided considerable help in collecting some of the papers.
My greatest personal thanks are for my husband - Ufuk, who has always supported and encouraged me in my studies.
