Page vii Translator's Preface By Paul Blackburn The first thing to know about this translation is that it is reasonably literal, and that departures from this reasonable standard are in the interest of equivalent weights in modem American English. The second point is that it is made specifically to be read aloud. The student reading it to himself should take this seriously. Rather than reading it separately, students studying the poem might choose the best reader among them to listen to or might alternate reading sections to one another. The original was made to be sung or chanted in the presence of an audience by the juglar, the professional musician, in the context of a court. To try to bring across this aspect of a medieval epic seems to me more important to our sense of the work than to try to approximate line length, caesura, and the steadily recurring assonances. This was attempted successfully by my contemporary William S. Merwin, whose introduction to the poem in the Modem Library edition is especially valuable. I am also indebted to him specifically for the lovely formulation (II, 95) of don Jernimo's epithet, "the mitred man of merit," which I could not resist stealing. Anyone particularly interested in a version stressing the poetics of the work should read his version also. A heavier debt, and a completely unreturnable one, I owe to the great Spanish philologist Ramn Menndez
