Inspired by the 1973 riot at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, one of the most destructive prison riots in U.S. history, Robert H. Mitchells Ride the Lightning spins a fascinating web of political and legal intrigue. The blazing sun has sent the thermometer soaring over 100 degrees, and the three thousand inmates of McHenry Penitentiary, an aging, decrepit institution built to hold six hundred, are beginning to simmer. Governor David Horton, ignoring his advisors warnings, adamantly refuses to allocate money to repair and expand the crumbling, overcrowded facility. A prison riot, however, could be just the trump card needed by his political rival Glen Tobias. Moreover, certain inmates are aware that a riot would provide the perfect cover for an escape attempt. The new player in events at McHenry is young attorney Eric Williams, who views his recent appointment to the state pardon and parole board as a boost to his career and a distraction from his disintegrating marriage. He also sees in the appointment an opportunity to help societys unfortunates, who have run afoul of the law but now are struggling to turn their lives around. If Williams is not careful, his idealism could make him easy prey for manipulative criminals, not all of whom are behind bars. With a sure hand, Mitchell ratchets up the tension at every step of the way, through the climactic riot and the shocking denouement. At the same time, the novel addresses timely questions of prison reform, rehabilitation, and the problems faced by inmates preparing to return to life outside prison.

The most extensive property damage caused by a prison riot in the United States occurred in McAlester, Oklahoma, in 1973. The general background of this novel comes from that occurrence. However, all of the events and characters depicted herein are purely fictional and have no connection with that event.

Prologue
June 28, 1966The chains were wrapped around Larry Baker's waist and fastened to the manacles around his wrists. They felt heavy and cold. He shuffled awkwardly down the dim corridor. The bindings around his bare ankles made him feel helpless and humiliated. It was 102 degrees outside, probably at least that inside. Ribbons of perspiration rolled down his belly. Still, fear did not overwhelm Larry until the moment he sat down on the straight-backed wooden chair and faced the five members of the pardon and parole board. He allowed his old friend, anger, to rise up within him just enough to control his bowels.
"Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?" asked the young, heavyset man, glancing up only briefly at the inmate.
"Yes, sir," Larry answered in a deep voice. He fortified himself with memories of when he'd been on top of it all. The stud. The man who could do anything, the one everyone admiredor feared, which was just as good. But that was before her. How in God's name, he asked himself, did I let Bitch put me in here? He searched his mind for details. His birthday. That was the day she'd had him served with divorce papers. Bitch didn't know much, but she sure did know how to hurt.
"Mr. Baker," the fat young inquisitor almost shouted, startling Larry and all the observers. Chester Wyndott was serving his first term as chairman of the pardon and parole board. All eyes fixed on the chairman. The small parole hearing room was filled to overflowing with reporters from

all over the country. It was the first parole board in state history to be asked to stay an execution. Along with the reporters, only a handful of corrections officials were allowed in the room. Advocates both for and against capital punishment had been excluded as potentially disruptive.
Wyndott's voice lowered two octaves, and he assumed an almost melancholy tone, his gaze back on the papers in front of him. "The transcript shows that on June 1, 1959, your wife, Betty, instituted divorce proceedings. You contested the divorce over the custody of your two-year-old son. According to your wife's attorney, you were cited for contempt, for beating your wife, hiding in her home, going to her place of employment with a loaded shotgun, failing to pay child support, and hitting your wife with your car. Visitation rights were terminated based on allegations of neglect and abuse."
