Creedmans original Historical Dictionary of Costa Rica appeared in 1977. The new edition is nearly 50% larger, the fruit of several summers the author spent working in this most interesting part of Central America. The earlier text has been updated. Its coverage has also been notably extended, especially in respect to ecomonic and cultural history. The bibliography has been brought up to date, and a chronology has been added. The authors death intervened in June 1985, when only the first draft of the new edition had been written. His friend Gary G. Kuhn, professor of history, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, completed the work, to which the series editor, Laurence Hallewell, has also contributed.

Editor's Foreword
The 1977 edition of this work was dedicated "to those who will now never read it." Unhappily, this has now become apposite for the author himself. Dr. Creedman died soon after sending me the first draft of the new manuscript. In accordance with his last instructions, I then approached Professor Gary Kuhn of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He most generously agreed, not only to answer all my subsequent queries, but also to read and carefully check the entire manuscript. My transfer from Ohio State to the University of Minnesota made it possible for us to meet and consult with some regularity. In the process, I made a few revisions and additions of my own. All entries that have been substantially affected by our revisions are accordingly labelled with Gary's initials or my own, as appropriate. We were also most fortunate in having Rosa Mara de la Cueva de Peterson to convert the whole into the final manuscript: she drew our attention to a number of minor errors and inconsistencies we had both overlooked.
