Preface to the 1999 Edition
I welcome the opportunity to introduce Thomas Brown to a new readership. Few participants in the American Revolution had a more dangerous or eventful career, and few figured in such pivotal events as this son of a distinguished Yorkshire family. By following Thomas Brown's adventures, the reader can make sense of the course of the American Revolution on the southern frontier. Given the complexity of the history of that sector, that is no small accomplishment. In fact, the history of the southern phase of the war is so complicated that historians have shied away from it, or have confined themselves to events eastward of the Savannah River. Our school texts dwell on Lexington and Concord, then follow General Washington's heroic efforts to keep his army in the field, and only after Saratoga and the stalemate in the North do they come South, and then it is to describe Cornwallis's long campaign leading to Yorktown. Teachers in their classrooms have no time to do more. As a result, Georgia and the Floridas are peripheral, at best, in our collective memory of the Revolution, and the role of the Indian Nations so murky as not to matter.
