1 The Mysterious Light
Sara Harmon drew in a quick breath of surprise as she glimpsed the light shining from the small island across the bay.
There it was, gleaming at her from the tower room of the Spanish castle, like a fierce eye. All else was in darknessthe bay, the island, and the rest of the spooky-looking castle.
It must be very late at night, Sara thought. She could never sleep soundly her first night away from home. After tossing around in her bed for what seemed like hours, she had gotten up for a drink of water. Returning to her bedroom, she happened to glance out the window which faced the bay. It was

then that she saw the mysterious light wavering back and forth at the top of the tower.
The Spanish castle was supposed to be empty, Sara thought as she kept staring at the strange light. Nobody had lived in it since the magician had died, and that was several years ago. Then why was a light shining from its tower window in the middle of the night? she wondered. Was the Spanish castle really haunted, as the kids in Bayport seemed to think?
Sara shook her head firmly. That was just kid talk She and Sam didn't really believe in haunted houses. Just the same, she wished that Brian were here to see the light and explain what it meant.

From the time Sara and her twin brother, Sam, were able to travel alone, they had spent part of their summer vacations in Bayport, Florida, with Aunt Harriet and Uncle James Carson. Their white frame parsonage in the small gulf coast town was like a second home for Sara and Sam. And since Brian Hobbs, only a year older than the twins, lived right next door, the three of them had become the best of friends during those summer vacations.
