For over thirty-seven years, Margaret and Olaus Murie made their home in the mountainous wilderness of the Tetons, where Olaus Murie conducted his famous studies of the American elk, the wapiti. Through these years their home was almost a nature-conservation shrine to thousands of Americans interested in the out-of-doors, in animals, in nature in general. In alternate chapters, Olaus tells of his work as a field biologist for the old US Bureau of Biological Survey and recounts stories of his studies. Mrs Murie, from her side, describes their life together, on the trail, in the various camps, and nature adventures in that wilderness during all four seasons. The book is replete with stories of Jackson Hole people, of pioneer poets, and of the wild creatures that made their way into the Murie household. Olaus Muries evocative pen-and-ink drawings illuminate each chapter, and four pages of photographs help complete the picture of what life was like in the wapiti wilderness.

Foreword
This beautiful part of America, the Jackson Hole country, was our home and the locale of much of Olaus's professional work for the past thirty-six years. Our three children grew up here, and while Olaus's work took us to many wilderness areas, this particular one has been our home. Naturally, over the years, we gathered many stories about this valley and about the people who lived and worked here. In working and thinking over these materials, it seemed to us that there were some stories he should tell and some that I should tell. So we wrote this book as a joint enterprise and tried to weave the narratives and the impressions together into a harmonious whole. Some of Olaus's contributions to the book were completed by him just before his last illness, but many of the chapters here, both his and mine, grew over the years, accumulated informally in our files for the time when we would write just such a book. Many people, biologists, ranchers, townspeople, guides, the wives of many of these, helped us learn about this country and, by their own lives and inspiration, contributed to this book. To all of these people, I wish to extend Olaus's and my own acknowledgment for that assistance. The quotation facing this page expresses what the

authors have felt about the wapiti wilderness. We had hoped that this book might stimulate something of the same feeling about all the natural world.
