FOREWORD K9 EXPERT EDUCATION If you have purchased an American Pit Bull - photo 2
FOREWORD
K9 EXPERTEDUCATION
If you have purchased an American Pit Bull Terrier from a responsible breeder or adopted one from a shelter or are planning to do so congratulations! You are among the true dog lovers who think for yourselves and dont believe the old wives tales that circulate in the world of dogs and have tarnished many a fine breeds reputation.
Surely no breed has been demonized to the extent that the pit bull has. At the same time that there are loving pit bulls doing pet visitation at seniors facilities and childrens hospitals, there are countless communities across the nation that have banned all manner of dogs that bear even the slightest resemblance to the pit bull. This knee-jerk response to a proud and noble all-American creation is a sad state of affairs. Thankfully, there are compassionate dog lovers with big hearts much like yourselves who have made the acceptance of pit bulls their personal crusade, their labor of love. We wish them luck in their endeavors.
Perhaps no breed of dog is a greater reflection of the care or neglect he receives at the hands of his owner than the pit bull. As well-informed dog lovers and trainers know, there is no inherently evil breed. Every dog starts his life as a blank slate. A positive home that has made a conscious choice to have an American Pit Bull Terrier join the family for all the right reasons can accomplish so much with this breed. No dog is more versatile or more loving to his people. The truth is that the pit bull makes a poor watch dog because the breed is friendly, even toward strangers. Aggression is uncharacteristic in this breed and has always been considered highly undesirable. The breeds love of children is especially well-known.
LOW MAINTENANCE
This is a spit-and-polish breed when it comes to grooming. Regular ear cleaning and nail cutting, along with an occasional brushing, are all thats required. In the food department, the pit bull is known as an easy keeper. This is a generally healthy dog with a good appetite. In fact, the pit bull can be stoic in terms of enduring pain, so you need to be your dogs advocate, checking his eyes, ears, teeth and skin regularly to make sure all is well.
While grooming and feeding will be routine chores where you must invest time - photo 3
While grooming and feeding will be routine chores, where you must invest time is in socializing and training your pit bull. Most pit bulls will display some level of dog aggression. Couple that trait with his powerful physique and it is clear the pit bull requires an owner who will carefully socialize and obedience train the dog.
The earlier the socialization begins, the better. Puppy kindergarten classes are an excellent way to expose your dog to other breeds of varying temperaments. The public is less fearful of puppies than it is of adults. By having your dog walk calmly and happily by your side, eager to greet strangers, your neighbors will see a pit bull well integrated into the community.
Take advantage of any and all opportunities to demonstrate your dogs biddable temperament in parks, schools and community events. Show people that you have a sweet, affectionate dog who just happens to be a pit bull. The effort you make will send an important message to society dog owners and non-dog owners alike.
Your pit bull needs your affection and approval, but these alone wont create a well-adjusted dog. Set limits and boundaries for your dog, be consistent in your training and acknowledge your responsibility as a pit bull owner. Accepting these commitments while providing a loving home for your pit bull will help you raise a dog you can be proud of.

CHAPTER 1
ACTUALLY, HES A GOOD DOG
The American Pit Bull Terrier likes nothing better than to please his people - photo 5
The American Pit Bull Terrier likes nothing better than to please his people. That willingness to please is no accident. Although the APBTs forebears were bred to fight other animals, they also were bred to willingly go to extremes to please their humans. Today, this eagerness makes the APBT surprisingly easy to train. Moreover, the breeds love of people can extend well beyond his immediate family.
That said, American Pit Bull Terriers are not pushovers. Although they love their people and want to please them, they may have their own ideas on how to do so and sometimes those ideas conflict with those of their humans. Sometimes they can have a stubborn streak, but as a whole, American Pit Bull Terriers simply want to do what their master asks.
Different breeds have held the title of dangerous dog throughout history In - photo 6
Different breeds have held the title of dangerous dog throughout history. In the 19th century, it was the Bloodhound. In the 1960s and 1970s, Doberman Pinschers and German Shepherd Dogs found themselves in the dangerous dog spotlight. The pit bulls turn came in the late 1980s, when Sports Illustrated plastered a photo of a snarling dog on its July 27, 1987 cover with the headline Beware of This Dog. The story inside was about pit bulls and the widespread problem of dog fighting.
Carol Gaines a long-time APBT breeder and judge from Battle Ground Wash - photo 7
Carol Gaines, a long-time APBT breeder and judge from Battle Ground, Wash., agrees. They can be hard-headed and stubborn, but its because they seem to think all the time, she says. Labs are trainable, but APBTs are always busy training you. They are very happy when they make you happy; however, they want to do it their own way.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The pit bull is not an especially large dog. In fact, in his working form, the pit bull is a rather small dog. This enables owners to keep a pit bull in a small home or apartment quite comfortably. While he is an energetic dog when given the chance to exercise, he is a breed that prefers to relax when at home. As such, he will not be in the way at all times and will not make himself more conspicuous than many owners prefer their dogs to be.
