Foreword
Who better to write the story of the "Farthest North College President" than the former student editor of the Farthest North Collegian, early day publication of the University of Alaska. When Board President William A. O'Neill suggested that a history of the University and its first President be compiled, the idea was enthusiastically endorsed by all members of the Board of Regents with the understanding that William R. Cashen, Marshal of the University, Alaskan born alumnus, and thirty-year member of the faculty, be invited to undertake the writing assignment.
Bill accepted with no apparent reluctance and in eighteen months produced the extraordinary life story of Dr. Charles E. Bunnell and the pioneer college he founded. To understand the man and the institution he created, it is necessary to understand the time and place, Alaska, especially the great Interior of that vast land, from 1900 until 1950 and beyond.
In the following pages the age comes alive. The politicians, lawyers, and judges; the gold seekers, school teachers, and merchants; the pioneer housewives and the "Ladies of Fortune;" all are here, especially the frontier editors who wrote with vehemence and vigor on all that transpired.
