Foreword
If Charlotte Himber accomplishes only one thing within these pagesif she can eliminate the "denial stage" for Americans with hearing loss she will be giving a joyous gift to them and their loved ones. Most people who are trapped in the denial stage of hearing loss experience a personal crisis, followed by a time of honest revelation and acceptance; it is a time to admit that by denying their hearing loss they have been lying to others and themselves. Only then will they be able to discuss their hearing loss with friends and loved ones, for the burden of denial and secrecy will have lifted and they will at last be free to accept positive change.
My personal crisis happened in a cow pasture in Petaluma, California, at sunrise on a winter morning, during the filming of a scene for a television movie. The production crews had worked all night to ready this particular farmyard and pasture for a very intricate and expensive scene. Trucks and tractors, hens and geese, actors and extras were set to move on the director's call for "Action!" In the far background, a barn was wired to explode into flames, so this was a one-take-only situation. Everyone was very tense as the

final camera checks were completed. My particular moves were simple enough: on the signal, "Action!" I was to start the cows moving, walk through the herd, react to the explosion, and run to my farmhouse. "What a way to make a living," I chuckled to myself as I trudged out into the far pasture to join the twenty or so curious cows.
I looked up and saw the director raise his bullhorn. I waved to indicate that I was in place. All was motionless, silent, ready. But wait! Suddenly the chickens began scattering and the extras started running. "Must be a false start," I thought. "Or did I not hear the magic order, 'Action?' " A painful knot of anxiety twisted in my stomach. "Oh, no," I thought. ''Had I missed something importantagain?"
As the farmyard came to life and the cameras rolled, something quite unexpected happened. The cows started to move forward without my prodding. Those sad-eyed Guernseys stepped right out, and so did I. Not only did the herd save the production company thousands of dollars, they spared me the embarrassment of having to own up to my hearing impairment.
My little drama within a drama seems quite humorous to me today. In fact, I'm actually grateful it happened because it certainly shocked me out of my denial stage and left me open to the possibility of change. I'm also thankful I was wise enough to recognize and accept fate's message. I realize now that everyone goes through the anxiety and denial I had been living with. I'll be forever indebted to that herd of cows; they moved me to act, and act I did.
