CHAPTER ONE FROM THEN INTO NOW: THE ALBANY CYCLE
It may be commonplace to describe the voice of a writer as "unique," but it would be difficult to find a more appropriate description for the work of William Kennedy, an author who could be situated with ease in numerous twentieth century literary traditions, either American or international, and who could just as easily be shown not to fit squarely in any tradition at all. Kennedy's work as a whole, with its collection of repeated characters and its use of a common setting, has most often been compared to that of William Faulkner; Kennedy himself is an admitted admirer of Gabriel Garcia Mrquez, an admiration evident in the magical nature of many of Kennedy's settings and characters; the nature of these very characters as working-class, less-than-honorable heroes evokes in turn comparisons to Theodore Dreiser or maybe Raymond Carver; in the stories themselves it would be difficult to find more direct allusions to any writer other than James Joyce, a consummate modernist novelist; and in an era celebrating the voices of numerous cultural traditions within the American literary experience, Kennedy contributes one of his own in the voice he gives to Irish (Catholic)-Americans.You could, in short, situate Kennedy as an important

member of any of these literary traditions, and yet in doing so you would simultaneously reveal that no one tradition adequately describes him. Kennedy's "unique" voice embraces and yet transcends literary categories and forebears to shape a room all his own in contemporary American letters.
