Mountains, Mines, & Railroads
In the fall of 1858, the mountains of central Colorado lay as a bewildering maze, a land of rugged valleys and snowy summits known only to Indians and a small circle of mountain men and explorers. The great trails of the California gold rush had bypassed this heart of the Rockies, and the land was given little thought. Yet, there were whispers in the land that all of this was soon to change. In a matter of months, the whispers became a resounding summons, "Gold! Gold in the mountains of Colorado!"
Prospectors, dreamers, vagabonds, and boomers poured west across the Great Plains and converged on the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. In the vanguard of this migration were George and David Griffith, brothers and farmers from Bourbon County, Kentucky.
Arriving too late to capitalize on the initial discoveries at Central City and Idaho Springs, the Griffiths pushed farther west along the main branch of Clear Creek. In June of 1859, at the confluence of two streams near the corner of Eleventh and Rose streets in present-day Georgetown, their pans revealed gold. The brothers immediately staked a claim and the next year established the Griffith Mining District. George Griffith became District Recorder and gave his name to the growing cluster of cabins.
