Acknowledgments
This book project was christened in the great nor'easter of December 10, 1992, when my rented home in Brant Beach, New Jersey, welcomed in a bit of the Atlantic Ocean through a portal created when a picnic table sailed through the living room window. Nearly all of my Tom Dooley research materials survived even as the ocean swept beneath the floors over three days and nights of high tides. As darkness fell over the fourth day my mother and father arrived, having waited through the afternoon for the waters to recede from the causeway with the same patient spirit and good cheer that endured over the years I was writing this book. Five minutes after their arrival my friend Mike Young appeared in his '64 Newport: I thank him as well for friendship and inspiration spanning several decades.
