Acknowledgments
With two months to turn around an 80,000-word book, an author needs a lot of help. And I received it from many sources.
This book would not have been possible without Texas Sports Information Director John Bianco. John's knowledge and background of Ricky Williams were invaluable in researching and producing this book.
John was the closest person to Williams during his four years at Texas. His insight into what made Williams tick was most important. John spent more time with Williams during the calendar year of 1998 than any other person. He basically was Williams' guide through the maze of interviews, public appearances, games and awards banquets. And if there was a question about Williams, Bianco could answer it.
The Texas Sports Information Office, in particular Shawn Nestor, who helped me in the research, should be commended. The department is one of the best in college sports. And the office's excellent records and accounts of Williams' exploits helped greatly in writing the book. The staff also put up with me during the days I would sit in the office doing the research. Ken Stephens and Rick Gosselin of The Dallas Morning News are owed a tip of the hat for their help in developing research in Dallas. The same thanks goes to Lenny Vangilder in New Orleans.

The University of Texas football staff, Coach Mack Brown and Offensive Coordinator Greg Davis, UT Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs Chris Plonsky and UT
Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs Bill Little were extremely helpful in painting the picture of Williams at UT.
Several former UT coaches, including John Mackovic, also filled in details of Williams' development as a player and person at Texas. Former UT assistants helping were Carl Jackson, Steve Bernstein and Bucky Godbolt. William's high school coach Jerry Varner leant insight into his days in San Diego.
Chapters on Williams' performance at the 1999 Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl and Williams' relationship with the late Doak Walker would have not been possible without help from Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl Director of Media Relations Charlie Fiss, the Doak Walker family and Kit Sawers, Executive Director of the Dr Pepper Doak Walker National Running Back Award.
Gil Brandt, former Dallas Cowboys Director of Player Personnel and now a consultant for several NFL teams, and ESPN's Mike Gottfried were most thorough in analyzing Williams' professional potential and draft status.
And thanks also to Ricky Williams for the records and the memories. Writing this book a joy, not a labor. Williams provided us all with some historic and entertaining moments during his four years in Austin. Division I-A football has never seen a runner pile up as many yards. The following is an attempt to chronicle Williams' career.
