The Hideous Hidden: summary, description and annotation

Sylvia Legris probes and peels, carves and cleaves, amputates and dissects, to reveal the poetic potential of human and animal anatomy. Starting with the Greek writings of Hippocrates and the Latin language of medicine, and drawing from Leonardo da Vinci{u2019}s Anatomical Manuscripts, the dermatologist Robert Willan{u2019}s On Cutaneous Diseases (1808), and Baudelaire{u2019}s The Flowers of Evil, Legris infuses each poem with unique rhythms that roll off the tongue. The Hideous Hidden boldly celebrates anatomy{u2019}s wonders: Renounce the vestibule of non-vital vitals. / Confess the gallbladder, / the glandular wallflowers, / the objectionable oblong spleen.--Provided by publisher.

SWEAR HIPPOCRATIC
Fleshes
Heat flows from the mother city, the cold and gluey metropolis. Light a fire inside a room with no wind.

Air flabby with butcher breath, the greasy sky billowing cheeks in a propitiatory prophesy. The wind of self-fulfillment blows a room with no fire to a sweat. Questionably fleshed. Lungs the destination of all things in multiples of two pilgrimage. Kidney by kidney; a dextra, a sinistra... Ham-footed the dance to the unholy body.

Within or without a complicated riddle of meat.

Vitals
What is boil-lancing? What is bone-setting? What is the music of hands-on manipulation? The internal apparatus a rhythm section for canopic jars and humor-decanting Tupperware. Tell no lies and do no harm. Remove funny bone. Induce vomiting. Cup to skin.

Scalpel to vein. Drain drain drain drop by drop the vital spirit. Cantabilious. Melodious venesection. Through wintry rising and setting of the sun, through summery rising and setting of the sun, the seasons a singable digestion. Absorptional alchemy.

Air and water and place. Cauterize the river of cold phlegm. Phlebotomize the air of hot bile. What is stanch the earth and coagulate the appetites? What is reason the stars and placate the passions?

Airs, Waters, Places
Postulate the season that follows a disintegrating autumn. Fatal the over-soaked, the pustulated earth. River-biased.

At-sead by Etesian winds. A dysenteric torrential. ........ To bloodlet at the seventy-second hour. To rain in segments, scorpiond. Sky-flat to quartan, quartan to dropsy.

Convalesce an astrology of quartets, four-day cycles. ........ Twinned. The Geminiic, the water-chambered. Kidney-symmetrical, gutted and lungd. ........ ........

Brook the resinous river, the fat-plastered groundswell. Consider the indigestible nature of water downslope-dripping, the all-healing juices. ........ Rugged land, unfenced. The marsh-mouthed fen-foul breath. ........ ........

Winter-tempered, an inconspicuous asterism flushes the circulatory conduits. Southern-fished, intestinally zodiacd, the water-bearing imperative cold-humored, colonic. ........ Chronic the Virgo-choleric, the splenetic flabby inhabitants of the south-facing city. Brackish-water-irritable. Sun-brash, prickly-heated.

Blinkered by rash. ........ Mixed bone the wind-ricketd city, ankled and calved, drought-cavityd. Perish the pleurisyd, the parched lung, the despairing chest. Pre-Periclean the wind scorch-chokes the bilious earth. ........ ........

Drown the bad-dreamt east-sleeping melancholic. Draught of bulls gall, cows dung, a long-shadowed curative. Brewed bladder emmenagogue. A sheeps spleen rung into pools of conclusion. Coerce the dogpaddling crabbed sky, the sidewise-cramped, the uterine, the uric confluence.

Fleshes 2
Cold brings what is moist to a standstill.
Fleshes 2
Cold brings what is moist to a standstill.

The rarefied, the fatty. The rivered jejunum rising coryza. Constringed, the spring that blows northerly. Pooly waters. A pituitous constitution. The soft and stringy spleen.

Stomach the tripey city. The dura mater the metropolis of the cold and gluey. A jurisdiction of premeditated meat. Immortal ther, immortal heat. Warm fluids flood the sacrificial slaughter.

On the General Nature of the Glands
Mention the mesenteric, the renal, the axillary.
On the General Nature of the Glands
Mention the mesenteric, the renal, the axillary.

The inguinal, then the pectoral affections. Note the glands like copious clouds. Fluctuating tufts. The sickly flux. The suffering glands. The friable, the phlegmy.

The vanity-secreting. The smug-veined, the viscid.

Fleshes 3
After Arcturus, ardent fever. After Dogstar, pleurisies. Peripneumonies. Prevailing deafness.

The shaking sacred sickness. Juddering is the city of ill-formed joints. Southeasterlies blow the organs hollow. Autumn of resounding bone, cold and gluey membrane. At the head of the hollowest vessel, the heart. Beasts shelter in the vena cavissima.

Wild lungs light a fire in the vascular cave. Smolder the burgeoning serpent, the pancreatic snake. Damper the duodenum mute.

Coaguably
The heart shaped as a pyramid. Crimson. Pulsar.

A deep thirst falls unslakingly from star to footprint. Give an animal a drink of water stained red ochre; give an animal a drink of water dyed blue copper carbonate. While it drinks, cut its throat. The ground at its feet the color of red ochre; the ground at its feet a pool of blue copper carbonate... the heart pulsing in its entirety... Cut off the ears and remove the head from the heart.

Cut clean the apex of the heart and expose the auricles and atria. Sunset to sunset glaciers a red runoff rinse all the voluntary muscles. Sunrise to sunrise drink fluid and fire from the lungs and the air. In situ the heart a pyramid... ears inflate and collapse...

Opera Somnia
Prologue
Vigorous is she whose daytime activities remain consistent in sleep.

Robust is he whose nocturnal activities are free from disturbing influence. ........ Sleep-spindles singsong out of gnarly cognizance. Rolled backward into dream the eyes defy logic. In slow-wave sleep judgement contradicts the stars. ........ ........

Neither arm nor gnomon casts a shadow under the sky of sleep. ........ In the winter of dissection the sun dials back under humors of tossing and turning. In the winter of frozen prognosis the sun clouds with the bile of wakefulness. ........ Autumn comes, the blood thins, advances, in an arterial tug of war.
