Introduction

When I was about twelve or thirteen years old, I was afraid to go to sleep in my own room. There was a dark shadow that I swore was watching me from the corner. Whenever I mentioned it to anyone, I was told over and over again that it was just my imagination. I was told that there was no such thing as ghosts. Eventually, I began to believe that. I wanted to believe that because I had no idea what to do about it otherwisethe alternative was too overwhelming.
