Along the way, Dr. Garca has

come to epitomize an essential, but

not easily appreciated lesson for the

It was Dr. Garca who was

charged with introducing color to

the pages of The Wall Street Journal ,

one of some 700 W.E.D (writing

+ editing + design) projects he has

worked on in the 50 plus years of

being both a witness, and an active

instigator and proponent of the

digital revolution that has swept

through the news business.

I have worked with Dr. Garca

on three distinctly creative projects

over the past two decades. In 2006,

we gave new life to the struggling

international editions of The Wall

Street Journal in Europe and Asia,

creating one of the first print-

digital bundles. It was also one

of the 22 projects around the

world he has done that shrunk

outsized broadsheets into smaller,

easier to read formatssomething

revolutionary for any American

news brand because the smaller size

is still misconstrued as signaling a

lowering of quality.

In 2007, Dr. Garca helped me

bring to life Mint , Indias first

Berliner format newspaper and its

digital companion, LiveMint , which

have since gone on to become the

countrys leading quality brand

in business journalism, and a

comfortable No. 2 among its many

national English language business

offerings.

In 2009 and 2010, Dr. Garca

helped us rethink the print edition

of The Washington Post so that

it better synchronized with the

online brand, ultimately forging

one seamless offering.
