I think I know which verb to use.but can I use it in this context.? I have a verb in my mind that I think should be used, yet is it the one used by German speakers themselves? How can I find out?!Does this sound like you? As a fellow linguist and Translator, I completely empathise. This was the question I asked myself for many years. The world of languages can be a tricky one indeed. Countless days of learning verb tables and endings and running through verb after verb; this may seem like an impossible feat, yet is one commonly undertaken by dedicated linguists. My book, The Complete A-Z of German Verbs, seeks to break down this confusing process, providing students with a guide to help understand the multiple uses of German verbs in different scenarios. Upon reading this book, you will gain an insight into morphological patterns that may have eluded you in the past and will guide you on your path to becoming a talented German linguist. Are you ready?

About the Author

Connor Bartlam, a London-based Translator, graduated from The University of Manchester in June 2017 with a degree in Modern Foreign Languages, specialising in French and German. Working as a Freelance Translator for several years now, he is making large strides in the field of languages and, with his first book The Complete A-Z of German Verbs, hopes to facilitate the learning process for younger generations.

With his passion for languages sparked by his multilingual German grandmother who was evacuated to England during the war, he endeavoured to continue the family line and showed early promise, winning several academic awards for languages at his Secondary School in Snaresbrook.

However, from an early age, it became apparent that the learning resources available were fairly limited and at the age of 15, Connor started compiling a list of German verbs and their many meanings, continuing this process throughout Sixth Form and University.

With the publishing of his very first book, he hopes that fellow linguists from Secondary School to University and beyond will revel in the very same passion he enjoys so much. He hopes that this will be the first of many languages books to come and intends to produce similar works in French.

Preface

This book is the result of many years of hard work and determination in the field of languages. I first started writing this book during my GCSEs and carried it forward throughout my time studying a Joint Modern Foreign Languages Degree in German and French. This book is a culmination of verbs learnt during my studies and will, I hope, act as a basis upon which other students can develop their knowledge of the German language. These verbs should help to form the backbone of written and spoken German aiding with a study of the language itself from GCSE onwards. For ease of use, the German verbs have been arranged in alphabetical order with the German verb on the left and the many possible English translations on the right.

How to form German verbs

Below you will find a table of regular German verb endings that correspond with each of the pronouns ich (I), du (you singular), er/sie/es (he/she/it), wir (we), ihr (you plural), Sie/sie (you formal/they).

In order to form the conjugation of the verb in the present tense, you remove the -en at the end of the infinitive and replace it with the endings from the below table e.g. machen becomes Ich mach e (I do). This is also the case with imperfect, with machen becoming mach te (I did/ was doing).

PronounPresentImperfect
Ich-e-te
Du-st-test
Er/sie/es-t-te
Wir-en-ten
Ihr-t-tet
Sie/sie-en-ten

Perfect/past tense (regular verbs)

In order to form this tense, you need:

Pronoun + present tense form of haben (to have/to be) + ge-infinitive minus -en ending+t

E.g machen becomes Ich habege mach t = I did/ have done

Irregular verbs take sein instead of haben and their infinitive forms (minus -en) are surrounded by ge- and -en. They must satisfy the following conditions:

1) they are intransitive

2) they indicate a change of position/movement or condition

E.g. gehen becomes Ich binge gang en = I went/ have gone

Future tense

In order to form this tense, you need:

Pronoun + present tense form of werden (will/ to become) + infinitive of verb

E.g. machen becomes Ich werde machen = I will do
