PROLOGUE AS I WRITE this President Donald J Trump has been out of office for - photo 3

PROLOGUE

AS I WRITE this, President Donald J. Trump has been out of office for around nine months. In that time, Ive had the privilege of traveling with him all over the country. Weve been to state GOP conventions, CPAC events and fundraisers for the America First movement. Occasionally, these trips occur because some down-ballot candidate in a tough state is holding a rally and has requestedor, in most cases, begged foran appearance from the forty-fifth president of the United States. These candidates know that no matter what the Fake News tells us, an endorsement from President Trump is about as close to a guarantee of victory as you can get in these dark, confusing times. The liberal media tries to portray that the Trump magic is a thing of the past.

So, whenever President Trump gets one of these requests, provided the candidate hasnt committed any felonies or dragged him through the mud in the past, he tries his best to get on a plane and head over. When my schedule allows it, Ill go with him. I do this, in part, simply because I enjoy his company. President Trump, or the boss, as we always called him in the White House, has a wicked sense of humor, and traveling with him is never boring. But I also do it because I truly believe he is the leader of the conservative movement in this country, and whatever he does next, I will be there to support him.

Which brings me, of course, to the eight-hundred-pound elephant in the roomthe question that President Trump gets asked more than any other. As of this writing, I have never seen him enter a room without having to hear it at least ten times.

Whats next?

Many of the people who ask him this question are casual supporters. Theyre business associates and old friends, all genuinely curious about what the future holds for our forty-fifth president. Sometimes, these people are journalists looking for a few lines for their books, always smiling and throwing out compliments while theyre in the room, secretly hoping all the while that during their conversation, President Trump will slip up and say something that they can use against himsomething that they can put forward in their newspapers and Twitter feeds as further proof that he is evil, racist, sexist, bigoted, or whatever new liberal buzzword happens to be in vogue that day.

In both cases, President Trump doesnt quite answer the question. He equivocates, delays, says he cant say anything due to election laws and basic decorum. Most people are willing to take that non-answer for the moment, though not always happily.

But every once in a while, Ill hear the question come from someone who needs an answer. Needs it, it seems, like they need food, water, and air. These people are die-hard Trump supporters, the ones who sent him to the White House in November 2016. They are the forgotten men and women that President Trump served so well for four years in the White House, overcoming staggering odds to pass an historic agenda on their behalf. According to the latest totals, there are more than 70 million of these people, all of whom believe they were cheated out of another four years of President Trump. In the seconds between the question and the answer, these people often look as if they wont be able to breathe another few minutes without knowing whether its really going to happenwhether our president is going to come back, throw on his bright red MAGA 2024 hat, and save us from the horrible mess that the United States of America has become in his absence. For these people, the question comes from deep in their soul, sounding more like a desperate prayer than a simple inquiry.

I understand this third kind of person very well.

In fact, Im beginning to think that I might be one of them.

________________

In the months since we left the White House together in January 2021, President Trump and I have watched the country fall into the kind of disrepair that hasnt existed since... well, since the last time we put Sleepy Joe Biden in charge of anything. The integrity of our elections is in jeopardy, our enemies are laughing at us, Americans have been left behind in Afghanistan in a botched withdrawal that cost the lives of thirteen US military, and a pack of deranged, incompetent socialists has taken over our government.

In March, President Bidens secretary of state stood by while China told us that the United States is not operating from a position of strength. This spring, the administration shut down President Trumps inquiry into the (extremely likely) possibility that the Wuhan Coronavirus did, in fact, leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. It seems that everyone, from our leftist politicians to our celebrities, has made sucking up to the Chinese Communist Party part of the United States official foreign policy platform. If things get any worse, a struggling Joe Biden is going to be sending his son Hunter over to Beijing with a white flag (and maybe some of his horrible art) to negotiate the terms of our abject surrender.

Down at the Mexican border, hundreds of thousands of migrants are pouring into our country. The border wall that President Trump began building during his presidency spending millions of dollars for the best technology aroundis laying, unassembled and unpainted, on the sand. When I spoke with President Trump in July, he seemed particularly outraged by the incompetence of Democrats when it came to the border.

They have now spent two billion dollars guarding the unused materials for a new five hundred mile portion of the wall, he says. All because they didnt want to put up the wall. We could have had it built for five hundred million. Now all the contractors are asking for five times more. I know contractors better than anyone. They are smart. They want five times what they asked for, but theyre asking for money for not building the wall. Theyre saying that their businesses are destroyed. The Democrats are putting us out of business.

Nearly every time we speak, President Trump expresses profound sadness and worry for the American people, especially those in our major cities. This is understandable. In the months since hes been out of office, ideas that once sat at the fringes of the Democratic Partys platform have gone mainstream. Phrases like defund the police are not only taken seriously, they are standard talking points for anyone running in this country as a Democrat. Critical Race Theory is being taught in our schools, and it is on the verge of overrunning the United States military as well. Along with President Trump, I shudder at the thought that our soldiers, once the fear of every army in the world, might soon be required to ask the enemy for his preferred pronouns before executing a strike in a foreign land; maybe theyll have to hold diversity seminars for blood-thirsty members of ISIS to make the caliphate woke before eradicating it from the face of the earth.
