PREFACE
The fourteen papers in this volume were presented at an international conference, Archaeological Numismatics/Numismatic Archaeology, held at the Akropolis Studies Centre on the 31st May and the 1st June 1995. The conference was jointly organised by a committee representing the Athens Numismatic Museum, the National Hellenic Research Foundation, the British School at Athens, and the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens. The committee consisted of Dr I. Touratsoglou, Dr Ch. Papageorgiadou-Banis, Dr M.J. Price (replaced by Dr R.A. Tomlinson) and Dr K.A. Sheedy.
The theme of the conference, as its title indicates, was the on-going relationship of numismatic research to the wider discipline of archaeology. This seemed highly appropriate given the importance of the research facilities in Athens for the study of coins as archaeological artefacts recovered from excavations and as archaeological evidence in an increasing range of field studies. The Athens Numismatic Museum has been, of course, the great repository for all important coin finds in Greece (as well as a museum for significant numismatic donations). Its staff are regularly asked to assist with the identification of coins found by Greek and foreign archaeologists. The conference theme was also prompted, however, by a growing awareness that the disciplines of archaeology and numismatics were, after a century or so of ready interaction which had seen both grow in strength, now undergoing a period of estrangement. Numismatic research is more and more becoming the domain of coin specialists.
Dr Mando Oeconomides retired from the position of Director of the Athens Numismatic Museum in 1994. It would be fair to say that over the many years in which she had served as Director of this great museum she herself had become an institution not only in the world of numismatics but also within the archaeological community of Greece. The conference and this volume of papers are dedicated to Dr Oeconomides.
In 1994 Dr Martin Price, formerly Deputy Keeper of Coins and Medals at the British Museum, returned to Greece as the newly appointed Director of the British School at Athens. He had been Dr Oeconomides first pupil, and was now established as one of the most distinguished numismatists in the world. Martin relished the opportunity to hold this conference, and was delighted with the fact that it would honour Dr Oeconomides. It was with great sadness that we learnt that Martin Price had passed away one month before the conference. His loss has been keenly felt by all.
The conference brought together some of Dr Oeconomides colleagues and former students who have worked with her in Athens. It could not hope to include the many numismatists and archaeologists who visited the museum while Dr Oeconomides was Director and who had sought access to the collection, as well as her assistance in studying material. Instead it was intended simply to bring together a number of friends and colleagues who were then in Athens or who could be persuaded to visit Greece at that time and speak to the conference on an archaeological theme.
This is the second volume of papers to be published by the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens (in conjunction with Oxbow Books). The kindness of the Council and Director of the Institute in making available this avenue for publication as well as allowing the Institutes Deputy Director, Kenneth Sheedy, to devote time and resources to the project is gratefully acknowledged. The editors wish to thank Jan Casson Medhurst, Dr Martin Kreeb and Professor V. Mitsopoulos Leon for their assistance in the production of the book.
