Acknowledgments
I could not have achieved the accuracy or comprehensive nature of this book without the assistance and collaboration of many colleagues. (Of course, any inaccuracies are on my shoulders.) Foremost among them is Mark Eden Horowitz, whose role as Senior Music Specialist at the Library of Congress with incredibly deep knowledge of musical theater made him a resource turned to repeatedly. His insights and wisdom made this a better work.
The members of the editorial advisory team that aided me with the production of The Sondheim Review (20042015) and Everything Sondheim (20162017) have been invaluable: Sam Baltimore, Diana Calderazzo, Russell Dembin, Sean Patrick Flahaven, Eric Grode, Diane Nottle, John Olson, Paul Puccio, and Christopher Weimer. Several of them provided encouragement and assistance as I worked through the contents, especially reviewing many of the show entries. Among that team I must especially single out Christa Skiles, my longtime fellow Sondheim enthusiast and a world-class copy-editor.
While I cannot list all the many contributors to the magazines I edited (they are cited in footnotes and reference listings), I certainly could not have marshaled all this subject matter without referring frequently to their insightful essays, features, and reviews.
I should also mention Ray Birks, who published The Sondheim Review. In 2004 he took a chance on me, an occasional contributor to an established magazine, when he invited me to become the magazines managing editor. That experience certainly laid the foundation for my work on this encyclopedia.
Two other sources of inspiration were Aubrey Berg, the longtime chair of the renowned musical theater program at the University of Cincinnatis College-Conservatory of Music, who offered ongoing encouragement and advice, and the late Ed Stern, producing artistic director at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, whose devotion to producing Sondheims works sustained me with memorable productions.
Also providing ongoing support were Stephen Sondheims staff members Steve Clar and Peter Jones and attorney Rick Pappas. They were constantly at the ready when I had appeals or requests.
And finally, Stephen Sondheim himself: He responded quickly to my many queries for details, and even took the timein the midst of many ongoing creative activities demanding his attentionto answer my emails.
Without the involvement and encouragement of all these individuals, I would not have been able to assemble this encyclopedia. I am deeply grateful to each and every one.
