T HANK YOU ...

Its been a labour love writing this but one thing I realised as I went back through the years, stories and memories is the huge amount of time I have spent with some of these drivers, often whether they liked it or not. I want to say a huge thanks to them and to all people I have bothered with my questions over the years drivers, rugby players and athletes across all sports. I appreciate no one started driving, kicking a ball or picking up a tennis racket with the hope of being interviewed by me, but media is a vital part of the job now. Done in the right way, it shouldnt be a chore, and I hope I have achieved more fun and pleasurable interviews than the reverse! Also a big thanks must go to the teams and PRs who are there throughout the highs and lows.

I wouldnt have considered this job had my father not taken me to sports events around the world as a kid. In fact, I had been to more F1, rugby, athletics, Wimbledon and sporting events as a child than most sports fans get to in their entire lives. Thank you, Dad/Bob for letting me be the annoying child who turned up at every press box in sport sitting beside Murray Walker, Bill McLaren and some of the other greats in TV and newspapers!

To my mum, who is my biggest supporter she is not a massive sports fan but, through my work, has come with me on holiday detours to rugby, F3, super bikes and random events all around the world. She does enjoy the fact I can take her to horse racing and equestrian events and the occasional trip to Monaco. A huge thanks to my brother, Grant, for keeping me grounded and for being present whilst I seem to be continuously absent.

My good friend Ben Edwards was good enough to read this book at various stages of its creation, and I firmly believe that if you ever need something fact-checked, find a commentator! Ben is one of the best in any sport and it has been a pleasure to work with him in various series over the years nearly twenty years! Speaking of commentators, the wonderful Andrew Cotter encouraged me to write this and helped me choose Black & White Publishing.

To all my friends in the paddock over the years, who are too many to mention, but a few who keep me sane on the road include Karun Chandhok, Ted Kravitz and Mervi Kallio and all the girls and guys at the interview pen and paddock.

Huge thanks to David Coulthard for his friendship and support on and off track over the years and for writing the foreword to this book. We have a great Scuderia Ecosse from Sir Jackie (thanks for the lovely words) and also the entire Stewart clan, Allan McNish, the Franchittis we are a close-knit group and support each other a lot. Mark Webber is certainly an honorary member.

I only told my mum and Grant and a few others, including my great friends Rebecca Banks and Grace Barber, that I was even writing a book, so a huge thanks to them for their encouragement.

Thank you to the BBC for so much, including giving me a chance. Inside F1 was a programme I used to present on the BBC News channel, so thank you to Ben Gallop, who let me use the title for this book. Channel 4 and Whisper have been wonderful supporters since 2016 and I love working for them.

A big thanks to all at Black & White Publishing and Bonnier Books UK, especially Campbell Brown, who was having zoom meetings with me at F1 races in order to get this book published, and to Ali McBride, who has the patience of a saint, as tested by me, and to Thomas, Rachel and Clem.

The photo on the front was taken by one the great F1 photographers and indeed characters of the paddock, Mark Thompson, who kindly snapped the picture of me between F1 practice sessions (and a missile strike on an oil field) in Saudi Arabia and donated his fee to charity.

Finally, thank you so much for reading Inside F1 and for watching over the years.
