How does a child learn to talk, speak and read? By experience! Someone who cares talks to them, reads to them and teaches them how to write. What little child doesnt like to have a story read to them? Learn how to communicate in French the same way. It doesnt have to be complicated to be effective and enjoyable. This book contains 15 original French short stories designed to help you improve your reading and listening skills and learn new vocabulary easily. The stories are fun and engaging. They are written for beginner to low intermediate French learners [or A1-A2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)].

Enjoy yourself while you learn to speak French. A common complaint for those learning to speak French is how difficult it is to find suitable reading material, and the lack of audio content to practice listening and pronunciation. This book provides a solution for both of those problems. It gives the reader a fun way to learn how to read, speak, listen to and pronounce French without getting bored or intimidated by the monotony of memorizing grammar rules and vocabulary lists. Have fun while learning French! Useful story themes cultivate a natural development to speaking French instinctively. Imagine listening to your favorite story.

Learning happens naturally. Here, your brain puts the pieces of vocabulary and grammar structures together as you spend time in stories that revolve around real life scenarios. Then, use what you learn in your day-to-day conversations. You retain more because you can actually use it! In learning this way, your instincts connected with communication are engaged and your conversation will flow naturally. Also, this format makes it easy for you to do away with the dictionary! (Thank heavens.) French-English glossaries are tucked into the stories to help you understand certain words. Not only will you will be introduced to over 1,500 French words and expressions, but you will learn how to use them in the proper context.

Boost your progress by using the summary exercises at the end of each story to practice your writing skills. The stories are not only interesting to read but also revolve around useful situations. You learn about: Family Days/Months Numbers Weather Introducinyourself House/Nature Clothing Shopping Visiting/Tourim Weekend Activities Daily Routine Describing yourself Food/Cooking Jobs and Occupation At the Train Station Advice on how to use this book effectively While you can choose your own way of enjoying this book, I have prepared some advice on how you can take full advantage of it and maximize your learning and enjoyment.

    1. Dont try to understand everything the first time around.
As a beginner, your French skills will take time to develop. You may not understand everything. Thats OK.

Dont give up or get frustrated just because you are stuck on one word. I have tried to provide as much vocabulary as possible that I believe can instill in your mind the comprehension of the stories. If one word confuses you, just skip it and continue reading.

    1. Beware of direct translation.
You may have already learned some individual French words separately. Sometimes, though, when these words are put together, the meaning completely changes. Be careful not to translate word for word.

For example: tout le monde (literal meaning all the world ) = everybody. The same idea applies for phrasal verbs. For example: se mettre (literal meaning to put yourself ) = to start / to begin.

    1. Make use of the summary .
Each story comes with a sample summary. After reading each story, I encourage you to write your own summary to reinforce the learning process. After creating a summary based on your comprehension, compare it with the one provided.

I highly recommend completing this exercise. Its a good way to boost your writing skills.

    1. Review the words you learned.
The vocabulary recap at the end of each chapter allows a review which will help you recall and retain the new vocabulary and expressions you learned in the story.

Improve your listening and pronunciation skills with the audio recording Your book comes with the audio recording of each story, narrated by a native French speaker. Your comprehension of the spoken word will increase as your ears hear how the words sound and when you practice the pronunciation out loud while listening. The simple way a child learns how to communicate is the same method used here: practice and experience.

The stories are recorded in two ways: A slow version helps beginners improve their pronunciation A normal and natural speed furthers the intermediate and advanced learners listening and comprehension skills

    Picture 4
    For beginner-level learners :
    1. Read through the story first, focusing on understanding its subject matter and learning the vocabulary.
    2. Then listen to the slow audio version to practice your listening comprehension and pronunciation.
    3. Now listen to the natural speed version, increasing your ability to understand the story at this speed.
For intermediate to advanced-level learners: 1. Listen to the stories first. Confirm your understanding of them by reading it and checking out the vocabulary. 2. If you need to review, read the story, decide where your understanding needs improvement and start there! How can you download the audio? On the last page of this book, you will find the link which enables you to download the MP3 files that accompany this book.
