1. Dont try to understand everything the first time around.

As a beginner, your French skills will take time to develop. You may not understand everything. Thats OK.

Dont give up or get frustrated just because you are stuck on one word. I have tried to provide as much vocabulary as possible that I believe can instill in your mind the comprehension of the stories. If one word confuses you, just skip it and continue reading.

1. Beware of direct translation.

You may have already learned some individual French words separately. Sometimes, though, when these words are put together, the meaning completely changes. Be careful not to translate word for word.

For example: tout le monde (literal meaning all the world ) = everybody. The same idea applies for phrasal verbs. For example: se mettre (literal meaning to put yourself ) = to start / to begin.

1. Make use of the summary .

Each story comes with a sample summary. After reading each story, I encourage you to write your own summary to reinforce the learning process. After creating a summary based on your comprehension, compare it with the one provided.

I highly recommend completing this exercise. Its a good way to boost your writing skills.

1. Review the words you learned.

The vocabulary recap at the end of each chapter allows a review which will help you recall and retain the new vocabulary and expressions you learned in the story. Improve your listening and pronunciation skills with the audio recording Your book comes with the audio recording of each story, narrated by a native French speaker. Your comprehension of the spoken word will increase as your ears hear how the words sound and when you practice the pronunciation out loud while listening. The simple way a child learns how to communicate is the same method used here: practice and experience.

For beginner-level learners :

1. Read through the story first, focusing on understanding its subject matter and learning the vocabulary.
2. Then listen to the slow audio version to practice your listening comprehension and pronunciation.
3. Now listen to the natural speed version, increasing your ability to understand the story at this speed.

For intermediate to advanced-level learners: 1. Listen to the stories first. Confirm your understanding of them by reading it and checking out the vocabulary. 2.
